    Ok place for a nurse

    RN (Current Employee)

ProsPTO is decent. Self scheduling and only working three days a week. Computerized charting. Continuing education is paid for and mandatory.

ConsShort staffed. Budget cuts means sending staff home and cancelled staff meetings. Says they are transparent but always in the dark. Will be coming up on a year as a RN in July hoping for a yearly raise but others say it won't happen.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't claim to be transparent and then keep everyone in the dark. Spend more time and effort on staffing and increasing safety for patient care rather than just making the hospital look nice.

A big company with a wide range of potential work situations

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere are some very smart people at HCA and I met a number of people that I really respected. For some people their job at HCA is the best job they ever had.

ConsIf you work at the corporate HQ you need to attach yourself to a climber who is on the way up otherwise your group may dissolve in the next annual re-org. You may end up unable to please everyone with their different agendas and have to leave. The best positions are away from HQ.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet people who are just there to work do the work and stay out of the politics.

Patient Safety Should be The Top Priority

Pharmacist (Former Employee) Oklahoma City, OK

ProsBarcode Scanning of Medications prior to administration dramatically reduced medication errors and smart pump technology also reduced medication infusion errors. Good pay and benefits. Great physicians and support staff.

ConsAlways understaffed, high employee turnover rate, poorly trained technicians without certification required prior to hiring. Inexperienced local management who poorly manage both material and human resources. No clinical pharmacy opportunities for pharmacists, dispensing model is high risk for error, unprofessional work environment. Centralized order entry and verification very monotonous and inefficient. Too many supervisors for the department, first place I ever worked with supervisors who only work part-time. Poor system of education thru healthstream, let the drug companies come back in to bring us lunch and a CE program.

Advice to Senior ManagementRe-evaluate your dispensing and management model. Managers and supervisors protect and reward their friends. Raises are based on ranking employees based on popularity and not on actual performance criteria. Employees who were involved in a sentinel event got raises and a favorable review while employees with no errors and excellent attendance received no raises and bad evaluations. Something is wrong with your department when a third of your staff leaves in one year. Supervisors disappear for hours leaving the remaining staff overwhelmed with work. Was not uncommon to be scheduled to work with 2 supervisors at once who constantly gave advice on how to do your job, but would suddenly disappear to their office just when things got busy. When difficult situations arose the supervisors had no accountability and seldom offered assistance.
