    Pros

    Casual work environment, casual dress code, they provide free snacks and drinks in break rooms, you can learn a lot.

    Cons

    Very political. They seem to be okay with keeping the lower level (tier 1) NOC techs segregated from the higher (tier 2 & 3) level techs. Non-managerial employees seem to have some sort of control over whether people get promotions by way of bad mouthing others resulting in bad reputations that can't be overlooked no matter what. Poorly designed datacenter with subpar equipment.

    Compensation is far lower than market rate, especially for a "Techie" city like Austin. I doubled my income in 6 months after leaving this black hole with the experience and knowledge I gained here.

    Learn a lot, but get out after getting a bit of experience

    Pros

    You can learn a lot about open source technologies, linux, web hosting, and the internet.

    They had some interesting development practices when I started. You could automatically sign up for a new development database and it would be provisioned for you. They had a framework that could analyze a mysql db and write data access code automatically, etc. I'm not sure if that stuff is still around tho.

    Cons

    They only paid employees once a month, at the end of the month. It got monotonous, and I felt I spent a lot of time integrating other people's open source work into hostway's collective - I would have rather gotten a chance to code more. Also, they wanted to roll out a new platform but set ridiculous arbitrary internal deadlines to meet it.

    Treat your employees with more respect. Listen to them, everyone I met there was competent and cared about their job.

    I have been working at Hostway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Pay is adequate, my direct manager is a the best person I have worked for and provides us with a positive working environment and plenty of feedback. Different managers from other departments are always at hand to provide with assistance.
    I feel there is enough flexibility for me to implement my own improvements over existing systems - thus making the work flow a lot easier to keep control of.
    There are plenty of new things I can learn every day and there have been some interest in better educating the Department over the last year.

    Cons

    Hostway is playing catch up with most products to their major competitors and it doesn't appear that the needed changes are going to be implemented in order to change this.
    There is more fine tuning that needs to be done before major changes are made, currently changes are made without thinking about the repercussions.
    There must be more opportunities for different personal to develop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take more time to better understand the changes you are making, ask for more feedback from personal and customer(Focus Groups) before implementing them. Think about how you can develop Business Culture within the different Offices and how to improve involvement from employees into making the business successful. A Loyalty and Compensation program needs to be implemented to keep employees who are carrying much of the work flow.

    for the standard of living I feel well compensated monetarily

    no job security, declining sales, no real care for employees and no positive change to come

    Pros

    Caring management and varied work make for less tedium than some jobs. Relaxed environment means you can concentrate on getting the job done.

    Cons

    Slow to recognize or reward good work. Salaries lower than industry averages and limited employee benefits don't come close to making up for it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Tuition reimbursement and matching up to 6 for 401k would be nice. Clear path to advancement and better employee recognition. Unify, unify, unify..so many disparate systems it's hurting efficiency.
