My experience has not been healthy at all, especially because of the Manager.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsI found a little flexibility with scheduling work hours.

ConsThe company does not have a good team to work with nor does it have a good Manager. People are very unhappy there.

Fast-paced, engaging work environment; but company leadership is insensitive and unappreciative.

    Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsIf you work in operations, the environment is never boring. Working in airport retail provides constant stimulation; you're always faced with new people and new situations. And yet it's nice being part of a constant fixture that provides a helpful and comforting service to the passengers who come and go.

ConsCompany leadership places a very low value on hiring middle/upper managers who have decent (and in some cases, even basic) people-management skills. The store managers and below who work under these guys are treated very poorly: long hours and constant feedback on what they're doing wrong, but with minimal support or appreciation. When smart, reasonable people are hired, they tend to leave quickly.

Advice to Senior ManagementA few years ago, GM's and above supposedly underwent "intensive" emotional intelligence training, with no perceivable result. Maybe try it again, but with real commitment? Until this company places a real value on making its employees feel valued and supported, and giving them the tools, training, and resources to deliver on what's expected of them, the best of them (and Hudson's best hope for the future) will continue to leave.

    Good pay but disrespectful co-workers

Specialty Retail Associate (Former Employee) Queens Village, NY

ProsThe pay is good for retail.

ConsEveryone has an attitude, especially the sales associates. You don't do anything but stand all day and everyone is so bored that they just gossip and bad mouth everyone in the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe sales associates are rude and disrespectful to new co workers. They encourage each other to talk back to supervisors and even the supervisors steal from the company on overages from the register.

You'll love it if you don't care about restroom breaks

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Pittsburgh, PA

Prosthe employees and customers are nice

Conslow pay, you have to call someone for a restroom break, and someone may not be available,
you have lots of side work to do, and still have to wait on customers at the same time, which is pretty close to impossible-current management is all out for themselves, worried more about their bonus than they are about their employees being happy -high turnover makes for stress on the older faithful employees

Advice to Senior Managementask for suggestions from your employees, and then listen to them. Have some respect for your seasoned employees -don't look at them as higher paid people who are keeping your bonus down

    Rules change everyday

Supervisor (Current Employee) New York, NY

    ProsFull Time
Health Insurance (Which you have to investigate for yourself because they never mention it)

ConsRules change from day to day to accommodate understaffing
Given more than 3 stores to manage most of the time
    Micromanaging
Don't let you request days off if your a supervisor

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together!

    Not what I expected

Sales Associate (Current Employee) Newark, NJ

ProsCoworkers (at least the ones in my store) are very friendly, all having worked for Hudson 5-7 years; willing to work with you, help you.

ConsManagement very condescending (on good days) or rude (on bad days). Salary, though higher than most customer service jobs, is woefully low compared to the work done everyday --and don't get me started on the taxes/ withheld pay!

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember that sales associates are people too, basically the ones that made Hudson News into the legitimate global business it is today.

    It's the dead zone

Work In Corporate Office (Current Employee) East Rutherford, NJ

ProsVery casual work atmosphere. No pressure. Very "9-5". The office building has a gym and cafeteria.
    Nice space.

ConsSenior mgt has been there forever just waiting to retire. Not motivational. No career growth or training. The dead zone.

Advice to Senior ManagementReplace VP of HR with new blood. Stop phony Las Vegas rah rah and really implement meaningful career growth.

    Fair employer, but demanding

    Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsHudson's focus on customer service can do a great deal to train up skills on dealing with people.

ConsHudson "strongly encourages" all salaried employees to work at least 50 hours a week. This, combined with a tight payroll, can means store managers often find themselves working on register four or five days a week, in addition to their managerial duties.
