Tutor and coach for exam prep

    SAT/ACT Math Tutor (Current Employee)
    Melbourne, FL

ProsRewarding to help students with academic improvement.

ConsSalary is rather insulting and extremely low for such an important role and considering the level of education of the tutor. If not for the service to the youth provided, it would be more beneficial to flip burgers with my MBA.

Advice to Senior ManagementTraining for those without the benefit of prior education experience is a little lax. In my experience, it would be helpful to add practical examples of following through with finding and using the supplemental information available for program(s) involved. Sitting and reading training material is limited in what is required when you finally sit down with a student.

    Legal Work Practices?

    Tutor (Current Employee)
    Lawrence, NJ

    ProsFriendly and helpful coworkers
In theory, it is nice that Huntington aims to teach not just to the test (SAT, ACT) but to teach the skills and material necessary to do well on the test

ConsSome shady practices - asking tutors to come in up to an hour early and stay late to finish paperwork, but you can only clock in 5 minutes before your shift and must clock out 5 minutes after your scheduled shifts ends; Also not paying for the hours completed in training until 3 months after you've been working at the center...
Really poor materials. Full of typos, unclear explanations (unclear even for college grads, much less high school students struggling with the test)
Low salary compared to similar positions (and you're not allowed to speak to parents at all, maybe for fear that the parents will realize that only a tiny portion of their thousands of dollars are going to tutors?)

Advice to Senior ManagementPay tutors a more competitive wage, including prep time. Improve teaching materials.

    A decent part time job

    ACT Prep Tutor (Current Employee)
    Lake in the Hills, IL

ProsRelatively easy job. Kind coworkers and students. They are pretty flexible with scheduling and you can usually get a decent amount of hours depending upon your availability.

ConsThey often call a day or two ahead of time to ask you to work more or not to come in. The "training" provided is minimal at best and no one really explains to you where anything is. They'll answer if you ask.

Advice to Senior ManagementAct more like a person and be more organized when making schedules.

All materials provided easy to follow program

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe students at Huntington are great fun to work with and the tutoring program is well organized and easy to follow.

ConsNot enough hours, often schedule and assigned students change without notice. There is not enough opportunity for the tutors to discuss students' progress.

    Too Little Pay/Irregular Hours

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsAddresses issues with underperforming students well. Good atmosphere to encourage students to improve their performance. Teachers generally competent and good natured.

ConsHours not distributed equitably among employees, especially when students cancel; low salary; outdated books/curriculum (no alignment with new topics in NYS Core Curriculum for math). Subject tutoring not always done by qualified people, especially in math.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have too much turnover of the highly qualified licensed teachers that you should be investigating.

Nice people, nice environment, should be better pay

    Tutor (Former Employee)
    Cincinnati, OH

ProsNever have to lesson plan, low stress job, nice management, nice coworkers. Not much stress if you are a phonics teacher, though it can be kind of boring listening to phonics hour after hour. The floor is less boring, but with 4 students to 1 teacher, you are very BUSY!

ConsVery little pay for a 4-year agree. Don't expect a lot of hours. Not a career. After taxes, driving time, etc...not worth the little money left over. $12 an hour and I think the students pay at least 4-5x that, if not more.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood job but PAY MORE!
