I have been working at Huntington Learning Centers full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Got to help some of underachieving students make huge strides in their education foundation. Felt very happy to be part of the lives of so many families, wish I could of helped more. If parents had seen and understood the importance of grades in our society, I could of made a real impact in many more lives.

    Cons

Hours are ridiculous, give your staff a break. Cost of tutoring, our SAT and ACT students feel like they don't have to do any of the work, it should all just come to them since their parents paid the money. For our students that had some disabilities, I wish I was able to have more time to work with them and make more educational gains.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff once in awhile.

I have been working at Huntington Learning Centers part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They are flexible with hours if you are going to school and the pay is good.

    Cons

Hours are very inconsistant, only 1/4th pay when students dont show up, managers are very lax and dont care about anything other than how much they make.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't act like you are mightier than the teachers and try to appreciate them more.

I worked at Huntington Learning Centers part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Not having to travel to students' houses was the main reason I accepted this position. I enjoyed the interaction with the students, and seeing them learn and succeed is always the most fulfilling aspect of teaching. I was always paid correctly and on time.

    Cons

Not enough advance notice when students cancel (and they do often). Hardly any hours to begin with, and there is definitely an emphasis on pleasing the parent no matter what the student is scoring. The Huntington "methods" are outdated and waste time. The material itself is outdated- students need to be exposed to current technology, not folders and worksheets. The amount of record keeping per student is tedious and, frankly, unnecessary.

The lack of communication between management and staff was troubling (my location relied on copies of workbooks for younger students, and only the Director wanted access to the copy machine, which was fine by me. Thing is, the copies that I needed were never in the student's folder for their session. A waste of the student's time!)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

That when teachers leave unsatisfied with their position, they give an honest assessment of the Huntington methods. Make sure your employees are satisfied.

I have been working at Huntington Learning Centers part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

*Most of my coworkers are very friendly and I have socialized with some of them on the weekends
*I have seen many students make dramatic improvements, including some who were in danger of being held back a grade and were promoted after coming to HLC
    *Flexibility in creating your availability

    Cons

*Ridiculous high turnover rate for directors; each one comes in with his/her own rules, so it's hard to keep track of what's allowed and what isn't (regarding dress code, vacation policy, etc)
*Pay is very low (I'm currently at $13/hr and haven't had a raise in a long time)
*No medical benefits for part time staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    *Increase pay

I have been working at Huntington Learning Centers part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, close to home so there is no commute

    Cons

Inconsistent schedule/hours, charges parents $50 plus an hour but only pays tutors $15 per hour, no prep time given

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give tutors prep time when teaching SAT/ACT so they are prepared for their tutoring lessons

    Pros

Helping students with their homework and school courses is rewarding. Friendly employees and managers. Flexible schedule. Decent pay. Positive work environment.

    Cons

Unreliable schedule, when parents cancel sometimes you are already there and then need to go back home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your employees, gather a list of their areas they are strong in tutoring, ask how many hours a week they want or can give.
