I've had a great learning experience, but career opportunities depend heavily on your team

ProsWork life balance is variable depending on your group; here in Healthcare you can vary from 40-60 easily

ConsBad track record of hiring experienced people. They only nail it about 1/4 the time, and they fail miserably 1/4 the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to develop yourselves as leaders. Invest in more training for experienced hires when necessary, and be more selective of those you choose.

    Strings Alongs Temp-Hire Workers

    Sales Support Analyst (Former Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsOverall, Huron (Healthcare division) was a friendly place to work.

ConsMy supervisor did not have effective training skills and I was left having to figure things out for myself and attempting to read people's minds - because what was communicated was contrary to what was actually wanted.

In addition, I was kept on as a full-time temp for nine months - waiting and expecting to be hired the whole time, while they expected me to work as if I were on staff. About seven months in, an additional temp was brought on board whom I had to help train. Then at nine months I was let go and discovered that I had been training my replacement temp.

It was a very frustrating experience being led on for nine months.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make someone a supervisor unless they have proven training and communication skills.

Great people despite company growing pains

    Analyst (Former Employee)

ProsHuron has great benefits and employs a lot of wonderful people. They have a flexible model that allows people to work from home. Their time off policy is robust if you choose to use it- otherwise you do not get paid for any time when you leave the company..

ConsHuron is still working on figuring out who they want to be when they grow up. When they figure it out, and get the right leadership in place, I think they will do extraordinarily well.

Advice to Senior ManagementA clear, consistent, voice and vision would make a world of difference to the employees who are trying to carry it forward.

There are good times and bad.

ProsSome of the people make work enjoyable and relative to Big 4 consulting, you have much more flexibility.

ConsLife Sciences Senior Leadership does not lead and most definitely does not work together...be prepared to deal with politics and games constantly.

Great for those who no real healthcare experience

    Associate (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsWorking in different hospitals and team members. Great pay for a 60+ hour week. Great for college students with no knowledge of how a hospital works or the patient relationship.

ConsComing into Huron Consulting, leave any experience/knowledge behind and begin to learn something brand new. Past experience will not be valued and seen as a threat when recommending what was successful once... Process improvement is only based Hurons best practices and methodology, don't challenge it. It's a "club" work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be a better way to bring the experienced hires into the consulting role. I was so lost with no help from my management.

    ProsGood benefits. Friendly people.

ConsOut of the box thinking happens occasionally, but don't expect much execution on those ideas. Get your management consulting experience here and move on to a bigger and better company.

Collegiate Culture with Peers but Excessive Formality with Management

    Associate Consultant (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsOverall, I enjoyed my experience at Huron and thought my peers were great. It was a collegiate atmosphere where peers helped one another out. I worked with a lot of fun, smart people.

ConsEasily can get stuck specializing in something you're not interested in - this happened to me.
I didn't want to specialize but there was a need for someone with any of this expertise. I got put in this group - expressed interest in other work - but was not given much experience outside of this specialty.

Interactions with management were so formal to the point where I felt I couldn't be myself. And disagreeing with management is not taken well. Junior staff is essentially encouraged to always say 'yes' in order to nurture favoritism. This is common throughout the organization and with every MD I worked with, management seems to foster this formality.

The formality also extends into promotions. It seems like you get promoted only when they have really no choice but to promote you. You have been working on a higher level for maybe a year already, even two years. You don't get promoted because management knows you can perform at the next level. Instead you are slowly, very slowly given incremental responsibilities until you are actually performing at the next level for a while.

The organization was very Manager level heavy at the time I left Huron. Too many Managers and not enough seasoned Associates. As a result the promotion to Manager for an Associate becomes that much more difficult, unless you have been with Huron and within the same Group since graduating from college. They do favor internal promotions over new hires who have to 'prove' themselves.
