Sounds like a great place until you start working there. Projects are boring and most mid level managers are incompetent

Associate (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Huron Consulting full-time for more than a year

ProsYoung people, fun social events

ConsProjects are boring, culture is very cliqueish, need to be in the right clique, mgmt. takes very little interest in what you may be interested in specializing in. Mid level managers are incompetent.

Advice to Senior ManagementBuild an inclusive culture, try and match projects with career interests. Do something about managers who consistently get negative reviews. Its not rocket science!

Awful atmosphere, drone like responsiiblities

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsYou can learn extensively about formatting PowerPoint, Excel and Word documents. The travel benefits are decent, and they provide more vacation than some comparable companies.

Cons90% of Huron healthcare are new graduates with little to no healthcare experience. As any healthcare professional will tell you, this is limited. Unfortunately, knowledge of the healthcare industry is not appreciated. The ideal candidate will like to work on repetitive, checklist based tasks.
There is a lack of trust amongst employees, because everyone is trying to get ahead. Therefore, anything you say and do, will be used against you, especially during review time.
No true development: The mark of a learning organization, is to help people learn from their mistakes. Not at Huron, if you make a mistake, it will be used against you for years. It is often cloaked as "feedback", and is mostly for documentation, not learning purposes.
If you are experienced, the only way to get ahead is to kiss a lot of butt. If you didn't come right out of college and start at Huron you are often ostracized. It's extremely limiting as far as creativity and new ideas.
Will churn and burn analysts, they are expendable employees.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not a place for Experienced Hires

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Huron Consulting full-time for more than a year

Pros-Travel bonus
-Benefits
- Some good people

Cons- 90% of Huron healthcare are new graduates with little to no healthcare experience. The ones with healthcare experience, gained it only through working at Huron. As any healthcare professional will tell you, this is limited
- Gossip culture: There is a lack of trust amongst employees, because everyone is trying to get ahead. Therefore, anything you say and do, will be used against you, especially during review time.
- No true development: The mark of a learning organization, is to help people learn from their mistakes. Not at Huron, if you make a mistake, it will be used against you for years. It is often cloaked as "feedback"
- The solutions are not vetted. People cling onto methodology, which stunts creativity.
- NO respect for clinical personnel. Clinicians or people with previous management experience outside of healthcare are not valued.
- If you are experienced, the only way to get ahead is to kiss a lot of butt.
- They sell more work, than the manpower to complete a quality project. Due to turnover, more new people are being placed on projects. This decrease the quality of the work being produced.

Advice to Senior ManagementThis company is all hat and no cattle. Create a true value add for your client. Look at your exit interviews.

They are all about working 24/7 and getting those numbers. Not people friendly.

Director (Former Employee)

I worked at Huron Consulting full-time for less than a year

ProsSalary & great benefits - but when you broke it down to the hours I had to work, the salary wasn't worth it.

ConsNO WORK/LIFE BALANCE. They own you. Work grinder environment. If you aren't working on three engagements and not involved in 15 work groups you are not doing enough. 70% of work force is just out of college. They are willing to work 24/7 and prolong their college life, only now they have money and can travel. Not a work environment for the seasoned professional. Huron is not interested in new ideas or improving. They are interested in hitting their numbers and getting "quick hits." Upper management is clueless. They claim to have values but it is simply on paper to prevent law suits.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to those out in the field. Engage in productive dialogue about what could be improved in your practice. It is not perfect despite what you are being told.

Beware. If you are an experienced consultant this is not the firm to join.

Manager (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Huron Consulting full-time for more than a year

ProsThe pay is competitive and the benefits good. You receive an additional $750 per quarter for spending 25 nights out of town.

ConsThe culture is incentous and everyone gossips like high school. They promote those who exhibit their standards of success which is your ability to follow a checklist for cookie cutter solutions.

Advice to Senior ManagementRead in between the lines. Many people are unhappy and just waiting to receive their annual bonus come March before resigning.

Biggest mistake of my career - wasted time and effort for a company that doesn't care

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Huron Consulting full-time for more than a year

ProsDecent PTO benefits - if you're ever able to take any.

ConsApathetic and complacent culture on the corporate side (in one particular practice area, at least). Leadership is self-righteous and self-serving. The majority of them talk out of both sides of their mouths. Really a depressing work environment.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy suggestion would be to clean house. I don't know if I encountered a single member of leadership that knew what they were doing, made any significant improvements, or even cared about what they did or who they managed. Start caring about your people! They are your most important assets! It says a lot about a company when a significant number of your operations staff leaves within a very short time frame. I find it amusing that one of their values is "integrity," but the only people that possess any integrity are the ones they are letting walk out the door.

New York branch has terrible managers in legal consulting team

Document Review Attorney (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Huron Consulting as a contractor

ProsLocation of the office on Wall Street; Not a lot of overtime work; Company culture itself seems pleasant. Company gets good clients and interesting projects.

Cons"Managers" have zero management skills. Unbelievable micro-managing, extreme lack of professionalism among one or two 'managers' who have sudden moments of pure tyranny. One manager treats workers like 5 year olds, does not know how to talk to people, and makes for a tense environment that slows productivity. Absolutely no support or guidance, No idea how such people actually get hired-does not seem to fit with Huron's culture. Also, no room for advancement or permanency, and thus, no motivation to put up with the nonsense or to do a good job.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook closely and then replace some of those in management in the NY legal consulting team that handles document review because they alienate the true professionals who can give their best to your company, even if on a temporary basis, and instead, attract the less skilled just because they are complacent.

Unrealistic Expectations, poor upper management

Manager (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Huron Consulting full-time for less than a year

ProsMy close peers make the job bearable

ConsUnrealistic expectations, very short staffed because people keep leaving due to lack of support from management, expectations change almost daily. The culture of the company is poor. No honest or open feedback. Everyone is in it just for themselves and goes behind your back or above you for everything. Upper Management does not stick up for their teams. Less than a year on the job and already looking for a new company... that should tell you a lot!

Advice to Senior ManagementGet managers that work to better their team, bashing people till they quit is not the way to manage a team. If you are going to set expectations for the people that work for you, it would be nice to lead by example.

A company full of the intellectually stunted with over inflated self worth.

Associate (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Huron Consulting full-time for more than a year

ProsMy experience with HCG involved dealing with superiors who had less aptitude and talent and felt threatened by those who could truly shine with clients.

ConsPolitically charged, generally 2nd or 3rd tier talent. I worked with very few consultants who really brought value to the client. Usually it was the re-treading of old PowerPoints with a Find/Replace old client name with new client name. You will not develop yourself much here. If you're smart, aggressive about your career and know how to communicate you would be much better off elsewhere.
