I have been working at IBM full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great place to learn new technologies, company invests a lot in training employees appropriately

    Cons

No room to grow, no career opportunities and advancement, they pitch that after one year you can move on to other roles within the company, but the opportunities are not there, and usually movements are lateral with no pay increase.

    Not Much Fun

I have been working at IBM full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good pay (as a band 10). Work from home. Largely get to define my own priorities and tasks in support of the overall mission. My manager isn't focused on time in the office as much as on accomplishing objectives, so work schedule varies and is flexible.

    Cons

Most of my projects (staff role in global for GTS) seem to go nowhere and don't make a difference to anything important, which isn't what I was hoping to do with my career. It's painful to get things done with so many competing interests and priorities in the company. Problems with employee technology and tools (e.g. cleaning up mail due to ridiculously low email quota, instant messaging and intranet sites not working, etc.) have to be dealt with on personal time (since I'm measured on objectives accomplished, not time in the office).

    Pros

IBM employee discounts (beneplace). IBM employee discounts (beneplace)

    Cons

    long hours
    un-releastic deadlines
    No Work and life balance
    cronyism
Too many chiefs not enough workers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Big blue is no longer the place to be cutting edge and be proud to call IBMers. Pony up more $$ to attract/keep young and smart talent and let go of some dead wait (management).

I worked at IBM full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Nice environment for supporting outsourced accounts and often able to work at customer sites or remotely. IBM offers competitive salaries and educational opportunities for some positions.

    Cons

IBM is one of the leaders in off-shoring jobs and if you're in a role that's offshored, you have about a 90% chance of being cut in a resource action. They target folks who have been around 10 to 15 years and maxed out on salaries. They start by lowering your performance rating without supporting evidence and once that happens, you're history. They supposedly give you an opportunity to find another position in the company but once your names on the cut list, that won't happen. The folks who stay are chosen based on personality vs performance within the group.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They should at least be honest with employees for the resource actions vs using false information to lower their ratings.
