Software Engineer Intern

Software Engineer Intern (Current Employee)
Ottawa, ON (Canada)

I have been working at IBM full-time for less than a year

ProsPay was really high compared to what I'm supposed to get for being so junior. Nice office, really cool building, and really great people. A flexible schedule, yoga lessons, and gym. The company is really large and you feel like you belong.

ConsNo catered food and other things you can expect from a place like Google I guess. Also lots of bureaucratic tape I find. I didn't really get affected by that too much but I know my co-workers did.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess tape. More food.

Amazing experience

Extreme Blue Intern (Former Employee)

I worked at IBM as an intern for less than a year

ProsIBM is no doubt a very big name on the cv. Working there can help you learn a lot about how big companies work, how the patent process works (lot of money there) and in general how to deal with management. If you are strong enough and know the right people I think your career can be quite fast. People are amazing.

ConsThere's far too much bureaucracy and (very important for me) the machines,at least in my lab, were quite crap.

Software Engineer Inter

Software Engineer Intern (Current Employee)
Austin, TX

I have been working at IBM as an intern for less than a year

ProsTech giant with massive resources and really talented people. You work on products that are touched by millions in mission critical areas. For such a big company, it feels very nimble. You can easily reach any employee worldwide through Sametime. It feels like a tight-knit environment, even thought you are 1 or hundreds of thousands. Every manager I have dealt with is awesome. Uber professionalism throughout.

ConsIt is a big company. It takes weeks to do some things that would be done in hours in a startup. I wish product development was more streamlined. That similar products were merged or shut down. And that products would not be saddled with every single possible feature.

Advice to Senior ManagementEvery single manager I have dealt with is awesome. So keep picking good people.

Extreme Blue Technical Internship

Extreme Blue Technical Intern (Current Employee)

I have been working at IBM as an intern for less than a year

ProsPrestigious program that has garnered mention in business strategy books; competitive pay and benefits (i.e. free housing, travel stipends, NYC weekend); brilliant and interesting coworkers; generally relaxed work environment with extraordinary autonomy for interns: you generally set your own pace and level of accountability; good work locations (could be a lot worse than Austin and Raleigh); do a halfway decent job as a technical intern and you'll practically have your pick of full time opportunities.

ConsThe success of your project and the quality of your experience is too heavily dependent upon the engagement of your project mentors (some teams had awesome mentors--others, not so much). Campus-wide perks are terrible (not even free coffee/tea, let alone anything else), too much time wasted on meetings and other bureaucratic proceedings. Executive presentations can disrupt an entire day which is problematic when you have several in one week.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more selective about the projects (and mentor teams) you accept if you can. Avoid project sponsorships from groups looking for cheap labor and do what you can to solicit higher profile opportunities that focus on IBM's strengths (analytics, big data, Smarter Planet type stuff).

Rumor is that a lot of executives think the program is an unnecessary expense, but it's one of the few things keeping IBM relevant to elite CS and engineering students--keep fighting the good fight!
