I have been working at IBM full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people! Leading technology. Plenty of on line resources and training. Enough job specialization that you can find a niche where you do what you love and someone else will do the other stuff. You can make lots of money.

    Cons

1st line managers are often geographically remote. For upper management, its all about the numbers; do not expect any personal consideration for unique circumstances. Money follows effort, but it takes lots of effort.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Year after year, we hear about salary increases being tied to a market reference point (midpoint for similar skills). Yet, we advertise that our people are the best. Please don't tell me I can't get a raise because I am above the market reference point, then sell me to a client as some sort of superman!

I have been working at IBM full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    -International assignments for college hires
-Cross continent collaboration on a daily basis
    -Leadership opportunities for college hires
    -Flexible working hours and locations

    Cons

-IBM politics often times gets in the way of progress and innovation.
-Recent changes in benefits (401K, Thanks Award, etc)
-Expect late night and early morning meetings if working with international counter parts

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Stop cutting benefits and allocate some real budgets for recruiting and retention - we as a company are losing talents due the recent actions called by the upper management.

Former Employee - Firmware Development in Shakopee, MN

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

Worked in software/firmware development in Rochester/MN for about three and half years as a vendor. Lot of freedom in getting the job done, not much monitoring. Everybody's potential seems to have been well utilized. Co-workers were really very helpful in getting up to speed during the first six months - 1 year. Very little office politics, and negative coworkers. Fast paced environment but project was well planned/organized, little chaos. Helps a lot in work/life balance by allowing to work from home, flexible working hours etc.

    Cons

For vendors there are some non job related problems since it is very difficult to convert to full time employee due to some legal restrictions ...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Use resources more effectively.

Sam is executing IBMs core values quite well by creating incentives to reach the attainment of those values.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

The best reasons to work at IBM is that there is endless opportunity for growth. One of the key values at IBM is 'innovation that matters' and they don't joke around about this. There is real incentive to be innovative and creative. There are opportunities all around if one can think outside of the box.

    Cons

One of the downsides of working at IBM is that it is so large and difficult to navigate if you're new. There is a wealth of information that is shared but sometimes it is difficult to access.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you are doing. Recognizing the people who are making a difference in the company and rewarding them.
