    Good placement year

Intern (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsWorking for a top blue chip adds value to your CV.
    Globally diverse and integrated teams.
The experience around you varies enormously from interns to specialists that were there 30 years ago.
    Good social experiences.
    Very supportive of interns.
    Some very great supportive people.
    A lot of courses available.
Good training of interns, for skill development.
Also there are schemes to get women into technology. A lot of events for development and guest speakers.

ConsThey do not offer a direct route to the grad scheme for their interns.
Some interns literally do nothing. However majority, and especially in my time, worked long hours, with no pay and it is expected of you.
Sometimes there is favouritism, by the development managers, and sometimes the work you do goes unnoticed if you are not highly connected with the development managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementFairer view of reviewing the interns.

Perhaps be less strict with applications and flexible.
Overall I would definitely work there again.

From start to finish, my internship at IBM was a truly amazing experience.

    Intern (Former Employee) Somers, NY

ProsI was able to go from one department to another experiencing different aspects of the company. Aspects that most college-aged kids are unable to obtain. Being immersed in the law department truly gave me opportunity to see what corporate law is like, and what type of law I may want to do in the future.

ConsSince it was my first experience in such a large corporation, I wish that I was given more training. Many things were new to me, and I was unaware of what was being discussed. Though the new information turned out very educational and helpful.

    Glad I did it.

Technical Support Specialist - Intern (Former Employee) Dubuque, IA

ProsIt is a well known company and it looks great when put on a resume. It also gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people. I really like the company as a whole, but unfortunately the branch I worked in did not do the most entertaining tasks.

ConsI was there for one summer and I didn't get a chance to actually learn much of anything new or interesting. The tasks seemed to be very simple and not a good use of the talent available.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide the interns with a clear objective and a project that is engaging.

    Faded glory

Intern (Former Employee) Winchester, England (UK)

ProsThe letters 'IBM' look impressive on a CV but they shouldn't be. (Theoretically) you get to work on some fairly high-profile projects.

ConsMy department was disorganised and unmotivated. The staff seemed in no hurry to change or improve and were perfectly happy to do their 9-5 and keep their head under the radar.

Few people showed initiative or took innovative risks. It seemed like the day job was a competition to see who could be noticed least.

Morale was rock-bottom. The US management were threatening to lay people off because sales weren't good enough. Well, of course they weren't! Not with that attitude and lack of enthusiasm.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet to know your staff better so you can exploit their talents. Otherwise they just get bored

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
