    IBM Internship

    IBM Intern (Former Employee)

ProsExcellent opportunities to learn â?? Free in class training and online learning (Valued at $500 to $3000 for non IBMers), access to all IBM products, time given to learn new skills required for the job, on site library, online books.
Great management â?? Smart, ready to give advice, interested in employees, no micro management.
Good feedback system â?? Everyone you work with has an input and no ranking system with coworkers
Tim Hortons on site and on site cafeteria (but its a bit pricy)
On site gym and lot of extra work activities (outdoor sports, yoga, pool, ps3s, community events, etc)
Great team environment and friendly coworkers.
    Competitive salary
     Discounted certifications
Well respected company (Your experience will be valued)
Interesting projects on world renowned products
    Company discounted tickets and vouchers

ConsDepends on your team, but personally I found some senior management to be bad in project management and some low performing workers getting awarded for non work related tasks.
Big company so some processes take much longer than they should
Lack of communication/co-ordination between IBM groups â?? Sometimes the same work is done by 2 different groups and they start competing against each other.

Advice to Senior ManagementDont give awards to underachievers as it creates a bad team atmosphere. Better manage projects by understanding stakeholders and by having a fixed time for project deliverables.

Good company, very good collaboration environment.

Software Engineering Intern (Current Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsIt matches my interesting. It provide very good environment. We often have comping and play event. People often get back to home very early. Often have tea time and tech talk. The people are all very nice and like to share knowledge and experience in IBM. The collaboration is very good, we often use instant messenger to help each other even we are in different location.

ConsThe food in cafeteria is expensive. We often have tech talk in each Research Center, however, we cannot see all the talk on-line. It will be much better if IBM provide free drink and free food.

Advice to Senior ManagementVery good management.

    Good placement year

Intern (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsWorking for a top blue chip adds value to your CV.
    Globally diverse and integrated teams.
The experience around you varies enormously from interns to specialists that were there 30 years ago.
    Good social experiences.
    Very supportive of interns.
    Some very great supportive people.
    A lot of courses available.
Good training of interns, for skill development.
Also there are schemes to get women into technology. A lot of events for development and guest speakers.

ConsThey do not offer a direct route to the grad scheme for their interns.
Some interns literally do nothing. However majority, and especially in my time, worked long hours, with no pay and it is expected of you.
Sometimes there is favouritism, by the development managers, and sometimes the work you do goes unnoticed if you are not highly connected with the development managers.

Advice to Senior ManagementFairer view of reviewing the interns.

Perhaps be less strict with applications and flexible.
Overall I would definitely work there again.

    Glad I did it.

Technical Support Specialist - Intern (Former Employee) Dubuque, IA

ProsIt is a well known company and it looks great when put on a resume. It also gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people. I really like the company as a whole, but unfortunately the branch I worked in did not do the most entertaining tasks.

ConsI was there for one summer and I didn't get a chance to actually learn much of anything new or interesting. The tasks seemed to be very simple and not a good use of the talent available.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide the interns with a clear objective and a project that is engaging.

It was GREAT to work with IBMers.

Intern of Storage Systems Operation (Former Employee) Shenzhen, Guangdong (China)

ProsThey would communicate with you patiently no matter what problems you met. You can share your idea freely and the atmosphere there is perfect!

ConsSometimes you feel working there is not very efficient and at a quite slow pace. There are some fixed steps to do things. Once you finished a project, you need to a lot of paper work.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf possible, I think employees need some flexibility when they are working.

    Software Engineering Intern

Software Engineering Intern (Former Employee) Bucharest (Romania)

ProsI love the fact that every task can be broken down to a series of smaller tasks which are then each solved and put back together for the overall solution. I also think it's great what we can work in just about every type of industry. I hate badly structured projects (code and phase-wise) and confusing POA

ConsI have been with IBM since 2011. While it may be the workplace for some it is not fitting towards the environment that I wish to be in. Their learning resources are very limited due to the age gap of employees. Well seasoned employees retire before completing the training of new employees which leads to inadequate skill levels. The technology is very old and out dated, and as a developer you do not feel like you are contributing since the components are so separate from each other.

    Great Industrial Year Experience.

Intern (Former Employee) London, England (UK)

ProsThe intern community was a great group of people to work and socialise with, made some lifelong friends.

ConsA lot of a interns work/role was very heavily based around mundane excel type work. There was opportunity to expand your responsibilities if you pushed/asked for it.
