    I worked at IBM

    Pros

    i) People, people people. My co-workers were mostly young and fun people. Very helpful and knowledgeable.
ii)Growth opportunity. IBM is a big company, you can switch between very different fields and still work for IBM - which is good for salary, further opportunities and meeting new people.
iii) The Research Triangle Park is a great place to live. The ocean is near, smokey mountains are near. A lot of nice clubs and a college life and city feel in the Raleigh area.

    Cons

    i) The cubicles were grey and rather boring. Some more collaboration on specific problem solving would have been better. Do not get me wrong, there are a lot of meeting and talk between developers and managers, but it was a tiny bit more general.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think managers should be educated to be managers, since most computer related people are a not exactly social. But still, I liked the managers, cool people.

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

Friendly People, great work environment. Interns were treated with a lot of respect and given interesting projects. We were assigned a mentor who worked very closely with us on assigned projects.

    Cons

Occasionally there was not enough work to do (especially when first starting out) which gets boring real fast. The group I was in (an IBM as a who in Endicott) suffered downsizing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I thought the internship program was fantastic and would recommend that IBM continue it. I liked workign there very much.

    Pros

Lots of challenging experiences, you are exposed to management and senior levels -and are given huge responsibilies from day one, the international and fast changing atmosphere is always very demanding but extremely rewarding also

    Cons

It is a very huge company so it can result stressfull sometimes in order to get a smooth running -in terms of paperwork

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go on with the good job! Imo, you should consider to join more junior roles at their career first stages

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

    Incredibly knowledgeable people
Tons of resources available to explore and learn from
All sorts of opportunities, if you look for them
    People are willing to help
    Loads of fun!
    Huge amounts of technical variety
    Very diverse workgroups

    Cons

    Intimidatingly large
    Managers are very needy
    Too much may be expected
Bad teams get your credit shared to them
You may just be mixed in with the rest

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut back on the sheer number of manager titles out there, and let them know that they have weight to pull too!

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

IBM has done a great job of investing money and resources into its internship experience (from which they make full-time offers). I would highly recommend IBM GBS for an internship as they treat interns with respect and assign challenging projects. Interns are also given opportunities to participate in social events and the compensation was more competitive than the other offers I received. IBM GBS hired around 50 interns nationwide in the summer of 2009, all of whom gave presentations to senior management.

    Cons

There should be bonuses offered for high performing interns

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to offer this internship program to undergraduates. Continue to invest money and resources in recruiting students from leading US Universities. This will drive competitive advantage and help IBM GBS compete with other consulting firms (Accenture, Deloitte, Booz ,etc)

    I worked at IBM

    Pros

Excellent opportunities to learn â?? Free in class training and online learning (Valued at $500 to $3000 for non IBMers), access to all IBM products, time given to learn new skills required for the job, on site library, online books.
Great management â?? Smart, ready to give advice, interested in employees, no micro management.
Good feedback system â?? Everyone you work with has an input and no ranking system with coworkers
Tim Hortons on site and on site cafeteria (but its a bit pricy)
On site gym and lot of extra work activities (outdoor sports, yoga, pool, ps3s, community events, etc)
Great team environment and friendly coworkers.
    Competitive salary
     Discounted certifications
Well respected company (Your experience will be valued)
Interesting projects on world renowned products
    Company discounted tickets and vouchers

    Cons

Depends on your team, but personally I found some senior management to be bad in project management and some low performing workers getting awarded for non work related tasks.
Big company so some processes take much longer than they should
Lack of communication/co-ordination between IBM groups â?? Sometimes the same work is done by 2 different groups and they start competing against each other.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dont give awards to underachievers as it creates a bad team atmosphere. Better manage projects by understanding stakeholders and by having a fixed time for project deliverables.

I have been working at IBM

    Pros

It matches my interesting. It provide very good environment. We often have comping and play event. People often get back to home very early. Often have tea time and tech talk. The people are all very nice and like to share knowledge and experience in IBM. The collaboration is very good, we often use instant messenger to help each other even we are in different location.

    Cons

The food in cafeteria is expensive. We often have tech talk in each Research Center, however, we cannot see all the talk on-line. It will be much better if IBM provide free drink and free food.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Very good management.

I worked at IBM as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The culture around IBM is definitely one of change. Its obvious that the company knows that it currently thinks/operates like a dinosaur and is trying to modernize both its operations and its software development styles.

    Cons

Still a dinosaur. In my experience they used old tools, old methods of software development, etc. I even saw developers email code to each other while I was there!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your interns cooler stuff and more fun events that are paid for by the company. While it is certainly a little dumb for us young folks (and coincidentally better engineers/designers) to be swayed by a company flying us out to Seattle for a Macklemore concert, it does, so take note.
