Former Employee - Intern in Melbourne (Australia)

    Pros

Good work-life balance and opportunity to maintain focus in other things outside work. Opportunity to network with others within business also present

    Cons

No real opportunity to do anything tangible. Limited scope for application of university study unless studied IT. Although IBM is known as a consulting firm, it heavily relies on IT even in areas such as management consulting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide better opportunities for staff to develop. Improve standard of recruiting. Firm is struggling to keep certain employees and certain people should not be hired.

Former Employee - PhD Research Intern  in  Yorktown Heights, NY
Former Employee - PhD Research Intern in Yorktown Heights, NY

    Pros

Access to a vast range of resources (financial and otherwise) for research, excellent mentoring system for research interns and strong encouragement to be creative. Excellent pay for research interns, excellent benefits (housing) and relocation offered.

    Cons

Few work related cons, except that I interend over the winter and no transport was available from housing unlike in the summer. TJ Watson is very isolated and impossible to reach by public transport. Taxis are not expensive though (Typ 15-20$ from TJ Watson to Mt Kisco)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep running the research intern program, and perhaps consider a little closer how to coordinate interns who do not intern during the main summer block

Former Employee - Consulting Intern in Brussels (Belgium)

    Pros

    Good reputation of the company
Adequate salary for interns (for foreigners only)
    Positive learning experience
    Availability of endless resources
Very flexible daily working hours, you never exceed the 7,5 hours a day that you guarantee in the contract!

    Cons

From the first day you arrive, you realize that IBM doesn't care of making you feel part of the whole team. There is no integration for interns, there is no program built around you and, moreover, there is no chance you will be hired at the end of your contract. Interns are merely a cheap labour resource for the company with an extremely high turnover.
Interns don't receive any help from HR in terms of support for job finding at the end of the contract or relocation to other IBM offices. The only way of communication with the HR is through another HR intern, who is basically useless.
The only way of being hired is through a Young Graduate Program but you must have strong recommendations in order to be hired. Meritocracy is sometimes an unknown concept.
