I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    Stable, high-growth, successful company
Challenging environment that pushes employees' limits and increases employees' skill sets
    Really smart and passionate CEO
A company that strives to help vets, pets, and people -- a great mission

    Cons

Demanding company that is growing quickly but not all areas are getting additional resources to keep up with the growth -- expectations are always increasing, which results in increased stress, pressure, and overload of work. It's difficult at times to feel like you're doing good work given the many directions people are pulled in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Always keep in mind that people are your most important resource. Don't burn out your good employees by having them compensate for others who aren't pulling their weight, just to avoid difficult conversations. Remember that the company will have more success growing quickly if you give your employees a chance to experience a reasonable work/life balance. Running people into the ground might produce short-term results but not long-term sustainability.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Rewarding career so far. Great time off policy, leadership is improving all of the time, good pay.

    Cons

Can be overwhelmed at times, communication is still difficult due to everyone's day to day work load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay focused on teams, work on employee review format. The current one is not conducive to helping employees with goals and development.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Support is different every single day, does not get boring. People who work in support care about the customers and are highly intelligent.

    Cons

Can be difficult to move out of support into other opportunities in the company. Highly technical skilled people are not always considered for promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider in house career fairs for customer support, they are the heart and soul of the company and are very loyal. They see and understand why IDEXX is successful: the customer

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits; empowering; people I work with.

    Cons

Corporate sometimes doesn't realize how important the field employees/locations are to the success of the entire company. The politics are evident and that can sometimes prevent others from being able to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge the value field employees/locations bring to the organization; politics exist yet those in corporate seem to have blinders on about it. At least validate that they do exist as we see the actions/non-actions that are associated with it.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time

    Pros

IDEXX focuses heavily on customer and employee satisfaction. The company is remarkably open to change, and empowers ambitious employees to make a positive difference in their own work environment.

    Cons

Some levels of management have a very limited knowledge of the job responsibilities of their direct reports. This can lead to unfair raises / reviews / promotions for these people as their supervisor does not understand their value to the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employee engagement needs to come from a place of understanding. Management should make a real effort to understand the talents and challenges of their employees, rather than relying on arbitrary and narrow metrics to judge their value.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The working environment is, for the most part, great. IDEXX seems to like taking care of its people.

    Cons

HR is terrible at working with applicants for any job. There really isn't anything they seem to do right.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have HR change the way they rate things. Be willing to let go of previous directions when they become the wrong direction.

I have been working at IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Dedicated, hard working and smart employees. Learned a tremendous amount while there, was able to network with very interesting people. Some travel but not too much. Good work life balance

    Cons

Manager distant/isolated from the team, did not work with employees to create a vision or direction. Confusing in that it was not clear where we were headed. Not much "human" in "Human Resources". Something is inherently wrong with HR in terms of on boarding and off boarding.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe get some managers that are more people oriented? Very smart R&D types that should stay in R&D and not become managers.
