Current Intern - Media Relations in Normal, IL
Current Intern - Media Relations in Normal, IL

I have been working at Illinois State as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

While working for Illinois State University's Redbird Athletics Communications, it is clear to see the people in the department truly care about furthering the development of the intern's skill set and professional work experience. You will be asked to complete tasks like a regular employee would and you certainly walk away from this experience thinking you will be more than prepared for a media relations job, or a job related to the field.

    Cons

    Really don't have any.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at Illinois State

    Pros

The university is of a good size, not too big and not too small. My department also plays quite well for our discipline, which is a plus (this does not apply to all other departments).

    Cons

The location. It is 2.5 hours from Chicago and 3 hours from St. Louis. In other words, there isn't much to do here if you get out of town. Proximity to U of I is good if you are looking for collaborations. It is a teaching focused university, so it may not be the place for you if you are research-oriented.

I have been working at Illinois State as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of time off, good benefits great environment being among college students. The town is very good, great public transportation. Recently recognized as one of the top ten towns to live.

    Cons

Still maturing in IT Project Management processes. In the middle of a large legacy sunset project, so extreme stress to meet deadlines, high turnover of management and team. We have time-off benefits but approval to get time off is hard at this time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in Project Managers before starting a project, do not promise dates to the world before planning the work. Promote good workers and qualm the team's fears that this high paced work and the push to complete is temporary and is highly appreciated.
