I worked at Illumina full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of freedom when working on a project. Had little difficulty getting resources needed, and lots of freedom on choosing how to approach a problem.

    Cons

If you need a lot of direction, not the place for you. After you finish a project, expect to have to find your next one. Several times I would volunteer for a project, and be told to find something else to do. certain aspects of company culture are very elitist.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need younger people in the company. Also need better direction from managers.

I have been working at Illumina as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Great atmosphere, very relaxed and transparent. The company has a lot of potential and has grown exponentially within the past few years.

    Cons

Since the company is still growing, there are processes and procedures continuously changing.

I have been working at Illumina full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Illumina has a very entrepreneurial spirit. The company has the resources to support it's employees and does so. Work environment is great. You will work some of the smartest people around.

    Cons

Illumina is having some growing pains. The company is eager to transform into a large company, but at what cost. Not a ton of opportunity for career enhancing moves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek out and encourage the managers/directors that are finding the right balance of process infrastructure and aggressive, entrepreneurial spirit.

I worked at Illumina as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Illumina is doing very interesting leading edge work in gene sequencing. Some very smart people here, doing very cool work. Pace is very fast, change is rapid in many areas. The folks I worked with were looking for better ways to do things. On-site cafeteria is pretty good too.

    Cons

There are some political battles and defense of territories. It was clear some struggles had been going on for quite some time and had become entrenched. It's a big company, with all the big company overhead and the burden of hide-bound procedures.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for ways to get people's eyes on the task at hand, rather than on the political territory. Not all teams are on the same page regarding changes to methodology... better buy-in and more clarity about "here's where we're going" would help.

I have been working at Illumina full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - developers are used to make new software, not maintenance of existing systems
    - lots of interesting projects in the bio-tech industry
    - fun place to work.
    - get to work with the latest software technologies

    Cons

    - not a software company. It's a hardware company first.
    - they don't have enough testers, or designers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - hire more testers and designers

I have been working at Illumina full-time

    Pros

    Great co-workers
Fast-paced environment to keep you from getting bored
    Great technology
What we do is helping change the world

    Cons

The fast-paced growth over the last decade has caused many gaps in business processes. So, we are trying to build our infrastructure while using small scale processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look for and ask for the gaps and invest in ways to build the sustainable business practices.

I have been working at Illumina full-time

    Pros

    - new projects left and right so there's always a lot to work on.
    - constantly working on new technologies, legacy products do no stick around for too long.
    - young and vibrant co-workers. lots of sports going on
    - decent cafeteria

    Cons

    - shifting focus can cause projects to start and end abruptly
    - the motto to "hire the best" can cause quite a competitive landscape that's difficult for junior positions to be adequately recognized.
    - portfolio expansion outpaces resourcing which leads to multi-tasking and project inefficiencies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick to a few core products and do them well.

I have been working at Illumina

    Pros

Im proud to have Illumina on my resume. This is a fast paced, do or die, sink or swim, you better keep up type of company. To be the leader in anything- you have to fight hard to make sure you remain on top so understand that there are a lot of high expectations. The people who work here are intelligent and very friendly. The dress code is business casual- which is awesome. The campus is beautiful.

    Cons

Did I mention it's fast paced with high expectations? You're going to have a large workload with the expectations to get it done- you're working 40 hours a week? Then youre not working enough and trust me, sooner or later it will show. We tend to come up with great ideas to solve the severe lack of structure- but we can never seem to sustain. We work in silos too much just trying to get our jobs done and keep up with the high demands. You want to take time off? Psh! Vacation means just stopping your work, letting the mountain grow only to come back to a bigger mess. If you're not consistently being proactive- vacations aren't worth it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not forget where you came from on Towne Center and before- you need every single individual that is working for you. Remember that open, "we're all on the same team" moral? You're slowly losing it- be careful not to turn into just another corporate company. Keep alive one of the biggest reasons we all wanted to be here.... But I do like your new executive wing!
