Very political but a good college job

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    Pros- Great pay for students
    - Flexible Hours
    - Company picnics and sporting events
    - For the most part hires very pleasant and enjoyable people

Cons- Upper management (DM's and even store managers) are out of the loop on both good and bad performance issues
    - Very political once you reach level 7 on up ...promotions were about 90% politics and 10% actual performance
    - Not exactly an intellectually stimulating environment...hard to work for some managers when you feel you can't learn anything from them (see previous point)
    - Felt that many changes in company procedures were the result of a DM or RM trying to put their name on something, rather than the new procedure actually being beneficial

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Overall pretty good, but kind of stressful because of the management.

    Associate (Former Employee)
    Mill Valley, CA

ProsThe pay is great in comparison to other fast food gigs. Free meals everyday of work (my favorite part), the hours are flexible i you know your schedule ahead of time. Training to move up was pretty good, and with just hard work you can move up.

Consmanagers were sometimes hard to deal with, and obviously set the schedule for their selves. The were mostly on he grill, thus when you were knew you had to rely on other new guys.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on dividing your managers on basics and have that be a priority.

good people, good food, stressful environment

    Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

Proswork with a lot of great people, fast paced, family atmosphere, everyone starts from the bottom, pay is very good given the industry. several company functions throughout the year.

Consas a manager, a lot of performance goals are unrealistic. if you serve the customer they way they want you to, you're going to miss a lot of your goals. job can be pretty stressful. politics game is played quite a bit. work/life balance is nonexistent, you find the majority of your friends are people you work with. only one weekend off per month (until you become manager of your own store, then you get a max of two per month). rotating schedule is either 8-6pm or 430p to 2a (which is sometimes followed by a 10a-630p), and day and night shifts happen all in the same work week. if you have a child, work/life balance is harder to balance.

Advice to Senior Managementstraighten out scheduling to help create a better work-life balance. tone down unrealistic expectations if performance goals aren't going to be adjusted either.

Fun and some nice perks but low quality of life

    Shiftperson (Current Employee)

ProsIt's a fast paced environment, especially in high volume stores and time goes by quickly. They offer fun activities and perks like company picnics and events.

Cons"Work/life balance" is a foreign concept. You're expected to be available for work at a moments notice and to put it before everything else, including family or other obligations.

    Neutral

    Associate Level I (Current Employee)
    Newhall, CA

ProsAs a starter and as my first job, I get great pay, free meals on break, and get to meet great people.

ConsManagers are a little passive when I casually report a conflict with another associate (example: another associate will rudely boss me around as well as rudely be sarcastic with me when it is only a managers place to explain what I should be cleaning up and so forth. The manager lets it happen). Some co-workers are not very accepting and rude; they always try to get me in trouble/written up. Applied for a part-time job asking for at least 18 hours a week - scheduled for one day a week, sometimes only for three hours.

It pays well but it isn't easy

    Level IV (Former Employee)

ProsThe pay above minimum, some co-workers

ConsNot a lot of training, co-workers and managers can be extremely rude, customers constantly treat workers with disrespect and you actually have to put up with it with a smile on your face, being told to constantly smile and talk with a high pitched influx in your voice

Advice to Senior ManagementActually try training your workers not just sending them off having no idea what to do.

    Ok for a starter job

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe atmosphere is laid back compared to other jobs. Easy to get time off if you need a flexible schedule.

ConsManagement is so young, and so flaky. Lots of playing favorites, lots of partying with associates.

Advice to Senior ManagementChoose your managers wisely, focus on their behavior more inside AND outside of the restaurant.

    High stress with OK pay

    Store Associate (Former Employee)
    Long Beach, CA

ProsWho doesn't love In N Out?
It's a great place to work at if you're a high school student or even a college student. The company itself is great and they appreciate their associates. You can even get dental/eye insurance as a part-time associate for a small fee.

ConsVery high stress and it's not recommended for those with a nervous/anxious persona. You will not stop moving and the customers are allowed to treat however they want.
They're not always flexible when it comes to scheduling and some managers may be too overbearing.

Advice to Senior Management- The customer is not always right.
    - Keep an eye out for EQUAL promotional opportunities for everyone, especially if they are hired at the same time.
