I have been working at Informatica

    Pros

The job offers very flexible hours and a great deal of freedom. Management trusts you to work when and where you want as long as you finish your work. There is a lot to learn.

    Cons

New employees are given very little guidance or feedback. The breadth of material to learn can be overwhelming. The development process has not matured.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Product managers seem constantly overworked. The company could benefit from another layer of management and better scheduling. The development process needs to be examined.

A fairly stable position in a stable company in an unstable industry

I have been working at Informatica

    Pros

    * Stable senior management team
    * Logical acquisition strategy and strong financial position to continue making acquisitions
    * Flexibility in where and when work is performed
    * Generous compensation package and bonuses

    Cons

    * Unfocused marketing strategy and outdated marketing organization structure
    * Lack of innovation, creativity, risk-taking, follow-through in marketing
    * Cramped and inconvenient located office space
    * Few or no opportunities for career advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leadership means identifying a clear goal, putting the organizational structure in place to achieve that goal, staffing that organization with confident and competent people, and executing on that goal, task by task. Don't solicit ideas for improvement and then "go dark." Follow through on your commitments to your team. There's a lot of untapped talent in your organization. Clear the dead wood, and you'll find it.

Growing Pain: mid-level managers really need to be trained first!

I have been working at Informatica

    Pros

    - work life balance
    - flexibility
    - pays industry average
    - opportunity to move across departments
    - great people to work with

    Cons

    - hard to move up
    - can have very long hours
    - mid-level management has no proper training

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some managers who care about the people rather than just good at managing the end result. Keep open door policy alive, it'll save our culture.

    Pros

Job stability, interesting problem and challenging work environment, smart engineering staff. Good growth for the last decade.

    Cons

less diversified workforce. You rarely see non-Asian engineers there, management from top down are all from one country. Some politics there for fighting different directions for product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Salary is low compared with industry

    I worked at Informatica

    Pros

Not a bad place to work - slightly better than average salary, good people, not high stress. Very understanding about life/work balance. Great product line and very well thought of in the industry.

    Cons

Lots of disparity as far as territory went - often average salespeople did very well and top notch salespeople suffered because of bad territories. Management is nice but pretty much status quo - they aren't really natural leaders.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would suggest creating a stronger delineation between field and inside - also recognize who your best people are and don't always look at the numbers. Get people more excited - just don't sit their and drone and overstate the obvious....

    I worked at Informatica

    Pros

Great place to work for engineer. Good product with great technologies. Work and life balance well. Opportunity to move and work in different teams within company

    Cons

Perf review process usually lean toward emphasizing on the negative than cheering the accomplishments. Salary is at average but not top.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Engineering manager needs to praise the good work or accomplishment from employee. Encourage innovation and to improve the daily communication process

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer in Redwood City, CA

    I worked at Informatica

    Pros

the salary and benefits were good. it's a large enough company to provide plenty of paths for career advancement. it's small enough that there aren't too many hurdles/bureaucracy impeding productivity. the company is well positioned compared to its competitors. they offer an employee stock purchase plan, which is a pretty good value. the company events can be pretty fun. we went on a few trips.

    Cons

the projects were pretty boring. the software development process is characterized by periods of low pressure and boredom followed by periods of high pressure (possibly working weekends) before a new release of a software product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

improve middle management by hiring people with better leadership skills (not only technical skills).

I have been working at Informatica

    Pros

very stable company during the unstable economy
nice friendly employees, there isn't a lot company politics within each of the departments
about average health / dental coverage
depending on the manager, the job is pretty fair and manageable

    Cons

every time someone leaves, there is no replacement due to very tight budgets (which is good for company survival during the slow economy but bad for raises or bonuses)

simultaneously juggling multiple projects due to lack of employees

some politics between subsidiaries or different product lines

sometimes it's hard to get an exact direction from management due to the constant change in product design and plans during the release cycle

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

some information needs to be filtered down a lot better.
