Does not care about retaining quality employees.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Falls Church, VA

ProsProvides good medical care to patients.

ConsPay is not keeping up with cost of living increases (0.5%) raises for past 3 years. No room for advancement in you are not a nurse or physician. No respect for physician extenders (physicians assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors). Does not cover continuing education which is typically a standard benefit for physician extenders.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your employees and invest in them. Do not over extend the budget by building before you can afford to build without skimping on employee salaries and benefits.

    Inova doesn't care about you.

    Registration Coordinator (Former Employee)
    Falls Church, VA

ProsGreat ER, this is the only place if want to go if I were seriously injured.

ConsThey do not care about their employees. Inova used to be a great place to work until they forgot how to treat their employees. It seems as though they forgot they are non-profit.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe kind to your employees. You need them.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

For 10+ years worked with great nurses and horrible management. Especially upper senior level management

    RN II (Current Employee)
    Fairfax, VA

ProsThe people I work with at the grunt level are knowledgeable and willing to share their knowledge. Location to where I live. 5 miles from home. It's hard to find any more decent things to say about the system.

ConsNot staff friendly when it comes to scheduling. Too worried about what surveys say and the surveys don't ask relevant questions! If you have a family emergency....well good luck trying to find coverage. Poor, poor, pay. PRN for 10 years and not a penny raise. No benefits, no vacation pay, no sick pay. While the CEO gets bonuses in the six digit figures. Expect you to go out of your way when staffing on busy days, or inclement weather days, but no appreciation when you do go out of your way to help. Right now it is a cut throat environment. Everyone is walking on pins and needles waiting for the next blow to staffing. How they got Magnet Status is beyond me. Senior management is out of touch with what is really happening on the floors. The good directors get pooped upon because they don't play upper managements games and the bad directors are praised because they play the games with brown noses. Don't threaten my job because survey numbers are down.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen, really listen, to staff. Don't give us meaningless surveys. Let us take care of patients. It's what we do best. Your thoughts on how you expect us to take care of a patient from your glass house is not working.

Hard work in company without focus

    Director (Current Employee)
    Fairfax, VA

    ProsNice surrounds, convenient to access

ConsDisjointed and arrogant senior leadership. Priorities focused on wrong things.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit chasing the impossible and focus on your front line staff and middle management rather than slash and burn to make budget.

    Good retirement job (non-clinical)

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Proswell-known hospital looks good on your resume, nice co-workers (mostly)

ConsNo opportunity for growth or education, supervisors and directors give no feedback and do not move forward with changes, everyone seems like they are here to do their 8 hours & get a paycheck, micromanaging is severe, Salary doesn't actually mean salary, no flex time and you have to use your PTO on the few holidays you actually get off.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut intelligent people(who know processes) in management positions

    Repeated Unprofessional Experiences

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsFree parking.

Feather in my cap to say that I worked in one of the top 50 hospitals in the nation. (But really, how impressive is that anyway?)

ConsNo pay raise for over 4 years. They hate to pay over-time, and any reason you give isn't good enough, even if you are taking care of a patient who collapsed!

Salaried employees are enslaved. My colleagues and I worked 10-12 hour days for years, and still more was layered on us and expected to be completed on time. We were encouraged to take work home! When I approached management to formally request more help, I was told "that isn't going to happen, so do the best you can". Absolutely no empathy from management.

Departmental morale was low for years, and teams were not encouraged to work cohesively.

Doctors are still treated as gods, that they do no wrong, and we are expected to kowtow to their crazy demands. Most doctors I worked with are still disrespectful to nurses, with being rude, yelling, blaming, finger-pointing, getting the patients worked up and throwing it back on the nurse to fix. I caught more than one doctor lying to me, and on several occasions at that! When I informed management of what occurred, I was told that "I did the right thing by reporting it, now step back and let them handle it." Whatever they did, did not change the habits of the physicians.

When I brought forth innovative ideas or constructive feedback, it fell on deaf ears. I had a few ways to streamline our work and prevent repetition of tasks - and was told by the senior staff nurse that "it wouldn't work." What irks me, is that 2 years later, she made the suggestion herself to the team, and suddenly it was a good idea!

In the last year, I interviewed for several positions in the Inova system, so that I could transfer to a less stressful job, and keep my salary and benefits. I had months of poor responses from Human Resources, who cannot keep their department well-staffed, and the staff that is there is overworked and difficult to reach. It took weeks to set up interviews. I had to repeatedly call back to find out if I would be offered a position. And, to my amazement, after I had successful interviews for 2 different positions, those positions were eliminated! I eventually found out why...

... Inova is BROKE! That is why they have been having layoffs, and outsourcing multiple departments. I was displaced from one of my jobs, and given 4 weeks notice. They are building multiple buildings, even though hospital census is down across the nation. They think that they can beef up business by building more outpt centers in more areas. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that these could all be empty buildings, if there is no insurance coverage, and no elective surgeries with the economy being down. They put out a plea to all employees system wide to brainstorm for them and come up with ways to save money! This is so ridiculous, now that they have already set the wheels in motion for their decline and downfall.

Advice to Senior ManagementI worked for over 9.5 years in the Inova system. I came with 23 years of hospital experience. I know a thing or two about being in this type of environment. I took plenty of your employee surveys and gave feedback - a lot of which appeared to be ignored. My supervisors were all focused on us making them look good, meet their deadlines, come in on their budget, etc.
I worked with employee relations to communicate concerns, and the answer was always to "work with your supervisor" - well, when your supervisor is completely out of touch with what you are talking about, there is no solution that you can agree upon.

    Abandon ship!

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFlexible work schedule (if your job permits telework)

ConsPay is ridiculous. The phrase "underpaid and overworked" barely captures what is happening with this company. Our bosses are super secretive about something but they won't tell us what. The work just keeps piling on as Inova lays off more people. I heard that Inova's IT just had a massive layoff this month. We were told that it is time to make personal sacrifices at home now. You can see that the employees are beginning to act like hungry dogs towards each other. Gossip, backstabbing...

Advice to Senior ManagementYou lead us on and then drop us on our heads. At least you still have a job...for now.

Biased toward physicians - nurses mistreated.

    Registered Nurse (Former Employee)
    Falls Church, VA

ProsI collected a paycheck and benefits.

ConsManagement defers to physicians in all matters, ethical or not. No respect for other professionals. Physicians seem disconnected to supporting staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart thinking about what makes logical sense - listen to experienced employees. Stop undermining your own departments.

It was challenge not thinking about looking for something better while at Inova

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Fairfax, VA

ProsThere are many good employees that work for dirt cheap and believe patient care is paramount despite management only looking at the bottom dollar.

ConsBeware getting help from Human Resource Department. They are not an advocate for employees. Don't expect a noticeable raise at the end of the year. Eleven Cents (0.11) increase for any employee, good or bad is unacceptable.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of you employees and you will have awesome organization.
