I have been working at Inovalon full-time

    Pros

I love working for Inovalon for a number of reasons. My coworkers are talented, bright, friendly, and professional. People are happy to answer questions and help you work through challenges. Upward mobility is not just possible, it is actively encouraged. I am constantly exposed to new challenges and tasks that stretch my professional skills and encourage me to grow.

Inovalon's commitment to it's core values shapes everything we do as employees. Integrity, nimbleness, service, passion, innovation, respect, and excellence - these are not just words (or an acronym), they are at the heart of what Inovalon's "culture" means. I can honestly say that I have been surprised by the way so many employees take these values to heart and make them a part of the daily work environment.

I love working for this company. No one is making me say this - it's true. I send recommendations for jobs here to people I know ALL THE TIME.

    Cons

I would love to see more/better professional training. Some of the training sessions we have are informative - but very dry. As someone who didn't start in the healthcare industry, the training I received was difficult to understand. There were many acronyms and complex data explanations, and not a lot of "layman's" terminology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are clearly residual affects from some of the growth pains Inovalon has experienced over the last few years, but the leadership is actively working to recognize and respond to those challenges. The introduction of Bob Wychulis as the company president is a big step in the right direction. His ongoing commitment to understand and respond to the concerns of Inovalon's employees is valuable and has not gone unnoticed.

It is important that our management team does not become so externally focused as to miss what is going on internally. Listen when employees are voicing concerns and then find ways to actively and openly respond. Be more transparent about the internal challenges we are facing as team.

As I've been getting settled into my new job, I find myself using many skills I learned at Inovalon. The people who work at Inovalon are among the brightest and understand the payer market.

    Cons

Intense work environment is not for everyone but can be rewarding. A tremendous amount of development and innovation is accomplished.

High turnover rate and benefits could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication to associates because they are not hearing the message.

    I worked at Inovalon

    Pros

Great company atmosphere in Michigan office. The higher ups care about the people doing the work and value input. They create opportunities for advancement and employee morale events. They strive for longevity of employees.

    Cons

Some mid-level management with power trips. A few were recently let go but a few remain.
Open office environment can feed the gossip mill and everyone trying to know everyone else's business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to evaluate and manage middle management in all offices. These people make or break the morale of frontline employees who work hard for you.

I worked at Inovalon full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company attracts very talented people. Also, the company's mission is very noble - helping people get the care that they need. The CARA/PA product line ensures individuals conditions are accurately documented so they can get the care that they need and enroll in programs that will help them. Similarly, the STAR product line ensures individuals get the right interventions at the right time to ensure quality of care.

The company's Chief Executive Officer and Chief Innovation Officer are truly smart and visionaries. Also, the company has grown tremendously since I started at Inovalon.

The company needs people that are strong contributors with breadth and depth (but does not tolerate fakes or wanna bees).

The company has a lot of growth opportunities. The key is having an internal champion, being a person that gets things done, and being liked by a VP. (This exists at all companies.)

    Cons

The company is growing fast and experiencing growing pains.

On the compensation side, the company pays fairly.

The drawback is: If you want the bonus expect to put in crazy hours. Unfortunately, bonus is a function of time that you put in, not the quality of your work or what you get done.

At other companies, if you continually put 80 hour weeks, you are seen as ineffective, incapable of leading change and/or delegating. At Inovalon, the more hours you put in, the more you are seen as committed.

Too many front line employees complain about not being challenged and too many managers complain of doing too much work. A true leader builds a solid team and delegates meaningful responsibilities to the team. In short, Inovalon needs more true leaders.

Leadership is thin at the VP and Sr. Director ranks (a few are good, but most are not seasoned and are clueless about true leadership). The company recognizes this and is developing programs to strengthen the middle management and upper management levels.

Many people at the lower ranks get thrown into a "Set-up to fail" situation. If you are savvy and know how to highlight management proactively (or worse offload the luggage to someone else) then you should be fine.

Unfortunately, politics and covering-your-ass symptoms are rampant in the company. But this exists in every company.

Turn-over is high (unless the company keeps you with an H1b visa).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Their selection process needs to be finetuned to identify and retain true talent. The C-level suite needs to shed the belief: that if you put in more hours, then you must be committed. Instead, they should see this as a symptom of poor leadership. Listen more to your HR partners. High turn-over rates are costly (direct and hidden costs) and a symptom of poor management processes, which are a reflection of management (VPs and below).

I have been working at Inovalon full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Inovalon provides an opportunity to work for a company on the cutting edge of the healthcare industry. This is a fast paced environment, where there is always something new to learn. Professional growth potential and advancement are also available.

    Cons

Limited work from home / tele-commute options. Having more flexibility in this area would be a plus for those in the Washington DC metro area.
