I have been working at Insight full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - The project team I worked with was great, hard working, caring, team-oriented.
    - The project team had three SAP go-lives and three migrations in a year; this no small feat, but I do not think anyone at a senior level understands this

    Cons

    - Management behavior is bullying, micro-management, out of touch with people
    - Systems/processes are out-moded
    - Lack of integration of functions - never integrated from 5 acquistions
    - Struggles with identity
    - Cannot clearly articulate value proposition
    - Makes most of its money by jacking up freight costs
    - HR is old school and outmoded
    - Benefits are average - emphasis is purely on cost containment
    - Too top heavy
    - Exec salaries are paid at ranges that a much larger company in terms of revenue, margin and employee base would pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Start over!
    - Sell the company!

Over the last 2 years Insight Service and Delivery (Saint Paul, MN) has gone downhill

    I worked at Insight

    Pros

Great staff, people are great to work with.

    Cons

Management in service area disengaged with staff. Hiring and firing done with no regard to how much revenue the employee is making the company or for certifications held. Employees paid 25-30% less than at other companies for the same work.

Made complaints to HR and within 1 week was terminated by the same person I wrote the email to, so much for trying to improve the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize you can't grow a company based on firing your most talented people. Every talented person you lay off now is working for your competition and this will come back to bite you.

    Pros

Reconized as being a good VAR
    Good overall package
Work hours matches every other competitor
Tends to leave you alone to work, this is a great job if you are a contractor (Temp)

    Cons

    Constantly reorganizing
Handing out promotions to those that have no clue
    No clear direction
No growth potential within the company or training to get the next job within the company

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find out who can help keep your customers, currently there are too many in the wrong positions pushing your customers out the door.

    -"Cow boy" style coding.

    Cons

-No Documentation at all, so if you are ready to figure out everything from project setup, configuration requirement and the project technical setup all by your self with out any help, than you should be able to live there
-Company is made up of many take overs so there may be lot of communication gap between different taken over teams and many managers so sometime its difficult to manage fund for them
-Unable to retain employees sometimes so high attrition rate for senior positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Should learn to follow proper and transparent procedures and business model so that resources and projects are well managed

Former Employee - Software Developer in Plano, TX
Former Employee - Software Developer in Plano, TX

    I worked at Insight

    Pros

Was part of the software company. This represents the most successful of Insights Operations, they were acquired by Insight in 2006. Even though they have been diminished by poor leadership and many, many, many people leaving or being let go it is still a very strong organization with a lot of 1st class talent and people who are driven to succeed. There is still good work to do in IT for these guys, but beware, as time has gone on it has become a churn and burn kind of shop. You can still get good job experience working here.

    Cons

It has been 5 years of constant big campaigns and promises with very little good execution on anything. They tend to be overly bureaucratic about everything, the individual contributor barely exists in the eyes of top management and most managers below the VP level have almost no authority to do much of anything other than just try to keep morale up. They have replaced virtually all of the top executives in the company within the last 2 to 3 years with very little if any improvement in the morale situation company wide. The culture from the main office in Tempe continues to drive the overall culture of this multi national company which is a real shame. Ken Lamneck looks to be a 1st rate CEO but the old culture of the company is extraordinarily resistant to any kind of change and it is questionable whether he will really be allowed to change and move the company forward the way it needs to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that individual contributors in the organization actually matter, this is a service and high touch business primarily. The bureaucratic management style is stifling the abilities of the people you have working for you. Fix the culture, the Tempe culture is a little too paranoid and intimidated by the pace of work that is going on in large corporate America these days. Stop appealing to their fears and help them move forward into the future.

Insight is a good for a job but such a lack of discipline from a sales company.

I have been working at Insight

    Pros

Insight is good where it is very large and easy to learn new things. Management is a little bit flexible when you need personal issues as well. Not a bad place for a JOB.

    Cons

There is such a lack of discipline from sales reps who do not care very much. There are a lot of people as well who seem to be on "cruise control" as well where they don't make the extra effort. A lot of people are more concerned about covering their own *ss. There doesn't seem to be very much unity and being in one of the larger offices that's not HQ, it seems like there is no "love" in the different offices unless you are in HQ.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have management who are more competent and respond better. There are some managers who aren't even in the office who are barely working. By having more accountability and encouragement from the managers, I feel like employees would be more happy. Have managers work with team mates more to self promote and move forward and promote their careers instead of having that feeling of being stuck with no where to go.

Insight: Potentially a good company with below par leadership

Current Employee - Sales in Tempe, AZ
Current Employee - Sales in Tempe, AZ

I have been working at Insight

    Pros

The pros are that you receive a paycheck even though compensation changes frequently and never in favor of the employee.

    Cons

Management lacks direction and foresight. The competition always seems two steps ahead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become proactive as opposed to the usual reactive approach. Create customer incentives to entice them to look at Insight as opposed to waiting for the competition to come up with ideas that you may or may not mirror. Once you implement a new initiative give it time to work as opposed to "pulling the plug" . Treat your employees as if they are valuable or at least act like they are.
