    Pros

It's really easy to get hired into sales at Insight - every other halfway decent company may want you to have experience, so Insight is great place to start when you have NONE. It's basically where you go to pay your dues, or "serve your time" as many of us refer to it, so you can get tech sales experience and then move on to a better job.

Just look at it as a way to win free stuff and get some free lunches while networking with people who will all be working somewhere else someday soon and getting the experience you need to move on.

    Cons

The sales training isn't very good so you're basically having to figure it out yourself.
    Lots of cold calling.
Expectations and quotas are always changing.
Compensation plan is always changing as well, making it harder and harder for you to earn commission.
Upper management sets the direction and doesn't really care about how it affects the sales people, and your sales manager may care, but not enough to speak up for fear of losing his/her job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be an entire culture shift and I doubt that's likely to happen. The sales force drives the revenue of the business and yet gets screwed at every turn. Nobody feels like they can speak up about how they really feel for fear of just getting fired.

    Pros

Good first job for right out of college. It will give you the work experience you need to move to another company.

    Cons

They will not pay you what you are worth and changes will be made to everything monthly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take care of your employees.

    Pros

Great bonuses, training, and autonomy is respected

    Cons

Too many changes in management to establish a bond and consistency

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your subordinates. Find out where they are in their career and where you need to lend a hand and offer guidance for their career path. Care enough to offer leadership proactively rather than disciplinary and reactive measures.

Insight – a commodity reseller not a place to work in professional services

I worked at Insight full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working for Insight introduced me to some nice contacts and gave me the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects.

    Cons

My initial experience with Insight was good, but it soured the longer I worked for them. It was upon resigning for a better opportunity I discovered how I was better off leaving them when I did. If one isn’t a resident of California, Massachusetts or Illinois, upon leaving Insight they forfeit all accrued PTO and comp time.

Working for them, it was easy to see that the company is driven more by hardware and software sales than the services they sell. Additionally, the rate at which I saw top talent leaving Insight, over my tenure, was a sign that it wasn’t a place that was willing to compensate or take care of its people. I’ve had friends recruited by the firm, and I’ve provided them the same cautions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve compensation and benefits; move away from the commodities sales business model.

I worked at Insight full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The team members are the best part of the company. The hours are not terrible and the facility is nice complete with a cafeteria.

    Cons

Over the past 18 months the company has gone through a complete leadership change at the VP level. They are bringing in many executives who hit the ceiling with competitors such as CDW and putting them into leadership roles. Unfortunately this has added significant ego and ladder climbers to that level. I believe C level executives and board of directors are good but don't realize the determent the incoming executives are creating on the company. I voluntarily left at the point I realized I couldn't feel good about myself representing their brand. It used to be customers, company and employees were the top priorities. It now is VP's, Share holders, customers, company and then employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check the egos and actual records of VP's coming into the company. You have not brought in talent you have brought in someone else's baggage.

Current Employee - Systems Engineer in Tampa, FL

I have been working at Insight full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I was stationed at a client site in the Tampa FL area 5 days a week. My boss who was not a technical guy what so ever never came around

    Cons

There was no room for advancement and everything that upper management ever promised me such as raises and paying for certifications never happened. My job as a systems engineer was sort of a dead end job.

    Pros

Company can sustain revenue from inside sales.
Some individuals in leadership are concerned with personnel and revenue growth.

    Cons

Current Senior Executive Leadership has not demonstrated the competencies required to lead an organization through revenue growth and the ability to compete and win customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Services sector has to determine a direction and effectively develop growth strategies, measure against plan and revise plans to mitigate risks and achieve the corporate goal.

I have been working at Insight full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - The project team I worked with was great, hard working, caring, team-oriented.
    - The project team had three SAP go-lives and three migrations in a year; this no small feat, but I do not think anyone at a senior level understands this

    Cons

    - Management behavior is bullying, micro-management, out of touch with people
    - Systems/processes are out-moded
    - Lack of integration of functions - never integrated from 5 acquistions
    - Struggles with identity
    - Cannot clearly articulate value proposition
    - Makes most of its money by jacking up freight costs
    - HR is old school and outmoded
    - Benefits are average - emphasis is purely on cost containment
    - Too top heavy
    - Exec salaries are paid at ranges that a much larger company in terms of revenue, margin and employee base would pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Start over!
    - Sell the company!

Over the last 2 years Insight Service and Delivery (Saint Paul, MN) has gone downhill

    I worked at Insight

    Pros

Great staff, people are great to work with.

    Cons

Management in service area disengaged with staff. Hiring and firing done with no regard to how much revenue the employee is making the company or for certifications held. Employees paid 25-30% less than at other companies for the same work.

Made complaints to HR and within 1 week was terminated by the same person I wrote the email to, so much for trying to improve the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize you can't grow a company based on firing your most talented people. Every talented person you lay off now is working for your competition and this will come back to bite you.
