management needs to value the good people that work here

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Dayton, NJ

ProsThe industry is good, the top management seems to have some good strategies.

ConsManagement in production should put more effort into valuing employees and improving the respect (actions speak louder than words). .

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't obsess about bottom line at expense of moral/losing good people.

Always one or two steps behind the competition

    Research Scientist (Former Employee)
    Middletown, NJ

Pros- Like another reviewer said, it's income when many are out of work. Pay rate is falling behind a bit, but still decent.

    - Decent bonus plan, when times are good, but it varies so much from one year to the next, so don't count on it for much.

    - People: many of the scientist who work here are some of the best in the business; they know a lot, share a lot, and smile while doing so. Just as long as management isn't around to put a stop to it.

    - Locations: locations are pretty decent; good facilities nearby, and depending on where you live, your commute is against traffic, which helps.

Cons- Horrible executive staff: VPs and directors are awful; they run the show according to nepotism, cronyism, and every other "ism" you can think of. 4 out of 5 of them are some of the worst human beings I have ever met, with no exaggeration. The few good ones are forced to just play along.

    - Horrible HR people: MBAs who've learned the art of playing dumb; If you apply here, write your resume word-for-word what's in the job listing, otherwise it will be too complicated for them.

    - Middle management is hit-or-miss. Some of them can be the most loyal, hardworking, supportive and inspiring people ever. Others have no business even working with other people, let alone being in a leadership role. The good ones usually leave soon, so don't get used to it. Speaking of leaving...

    - Turnover: Staff turns over like the ocean during a storm. There one week, gone the next. Can't really blame people for leaving since, aside from the other cons:

    - No career growth, unless you brown-nose, and even then you'll only get so far. I have no idea what their "Leadership" training camp is supposed to teach, but it accomplishes nothing. In fact, some folks came back from this training even worse than before.

    - Silos: I worked there for 5 years before I even knew other people worked with the same material I did. I'm all for protecting IP, but, seriously? 5 years of collaboration lost.

    - Used consultants to decide direction, not innovation. While the top 2 companies innovate with new technologies and new research platforms, IFF wastes money on consultants to tell them what to do and where the fat is. Surprise, there wasn't much fat, so everything stayed the same. Zero growth in productivity.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere's more to beating the competition than stealing their employees. Innovate, or play catch-up. It's your call. Listen to the people who work in the labs: they know best how to fix what's wrong, and how to develop new ideas.

Overall it has been normal experience, nothing out of the ordinary.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood products, good talent, salaries are slightly above the profesional median.

ConsTerrible locations, New Jersey. Stuffy "old world" management styles from the Executive leadership. It's totally money motivated with a 70's style of management. Long a go gave up all of there employee activity incentives, BBQ's, Sports, extracurricular employee functions.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe upper executive leadership need to wake up and show much more appreciation for their talent and employees. If not you'll see it on the balance sheet. A happy workforce is a very productive workforce. The coffee is on time to recognise the aroma!

Okay Company if you just want to follow along.

    Research Scientist (Current Employee)
    Hazlet, NJ

ProsIts people. Good, hard working, knowledgeable colleagues.

ConsUnequal opportunity for advancements. There is not any guidelines for advancements - subjective to boss. Senior management is said to be working on benchmarking salary/position grades, but that has been said for 2 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your employees, especially the junior and mid level grades. Make sure your slogan of recruiting, developing and retaining the best talents are not just that....a slogan.

Good place to park yourself for retirement or if you are a technical staff

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWork life balance - despite what insiders say about this being tough, it is really not that bad compared to other industries.
    Stable industry
Easy to relate to end products

ConsSiloed organization - makes communication hard plus high percentage of senior management are relatively new
Minimal career progression, tend to acquire rather than develop talent
    Low growth industry

Advice to Senior ManagementWalk the talk on people development

Used to be a Great Place to Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDiversified multinational company with opportunities to travel. Most people you work with will treat you nice and you will develop a professional relationship with them.

ConsOver the years, the company has changed and has become more "going forward" thinking and less people and employee related.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to outside consultants who really do not know the company and its culture, just use a little common sense.
