    Pros

You get to meet different people and establish friendships and are very lenient with work schedules.

In short, Sephora is a great company, J.C. Penney is not.

    I worked at J. C. Penney full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

As an esthetician and makeup artist, I went to school because I love the beauty industry and take pride in helping people look and feel their best, this is something that Sephora is great for, because it gave me the opportunity to do just that. I made a lot of friends here and we had a great team, which made meeting our sales goals easy because we worked so well together. The education and training that Sephora provides is unmatched, however for the first year I worked here, it was seldom if any at all. By the time I left we were receiving education at least once a month which was quite the improvement. Gratis is a perk, and of course the employee discount that extends to J. C. Penney, (but not freestanding Sephora stores or Sephora, com which was definitely a con).

    Cons

The management in my store was extremely poor. They don't care about you as a person, and I heard them make comments repeatedly about how expendable employees are. All that matters is if you're "in" and one of the favorites of the management team. Being a "favorite" had nothing to do with work ethic, or how may sales you made (oddly enough), but rather if you had the right personality that clicked with the Store Manager or the Beauty Leader. They had expectations of each employee, but did not communicate them effectively to the team members, and then would penalize them for not knowing. They did not like to see amity between employees, and you were penalized if you made friends. if it were up to them everybody should hate each other. It seems like they believed animosity fueled sales, (but Sephora/SiJCP employees don't work on commission, and we always made our monthly sales goals, so I don't really understand this philosophy...) It was extremely difficult as a full-time employee to accrue paid-time-off, which meant little to no work/life balance. Also, SiJCP did not carry nearly as many brands as Sephora does, if you're a beauty junkie and cosmetics connoisseur like myself, this is disappointing. I recommend applying to a Sephora freestanding store first if one is available to you in your area, before a Sephora inside JCP.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize a great employee when you have one. You may not believe it, but not everyone is the same. Some of us work harder than others and can do so much more for the company, especially if their heart is in it. Also, if you have expectations for each employee, communicate these expectations instead of punishing them for not knowing. The "coaching" philosophy of J.C. Penney is a joke and in-effective.

    I have been working at J. C. Penney full-time

    Pros

    Benefits for full time employees

    Cons

Inconsistant scheduling, last minute schedule changes with no notification, lack of sales, lack of company support for commissioned associates ie; advertising big ticket merchandise such as fine jewelry and furniture.. We get no help what so ever.. you are on your own when it comes to marketing in commissioned areas. We get pulled to non commissioned areas to ring, whenever there is a call out in another department without regard to productivity requirements. They just do not care about the associates anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with your team, address concerns by contacting key people in Plano.. sales do not build themselves and associates need back up and support in bringing in new customers. Learn what it is like to be on commission and offer alternative positions when the department is slow...respect productivity requirements by not pulling associates into other areas where they do not get credit for hours worked.
