Great company, awful customer and management experiences. Typical retail job.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Nashua, NH

I worked at J. C. Penney part-time for more than a year

ProsLots of employee benefits and love. Swag bags, restaurant freebies, etc. Great discount for the store. Good pay for a retail job. Flexible with hours. Took me seasonally for college. Good hours. Time and a half sometimes. Paid training!

ConsAwful computer systems that slow down customer service. Customers like to poop/pee/puke in fitting rooms. The cleaning crew is great, they just aren't cleaning everything that should be like dressing room mirrors etc. They have coupons for everyone to use but don't let you give them to customers unless they ask. After the holidays there are AWFUL hours. You can go from 40 hours a week all year and then after Christmas you might not even get a shift for a full week. They beat into you to get people to sign up for a JCP credit card. If you don't get customers to sign up you get in trouble. Management pits sales force against each other to get credit card sign ups. You might not even work a register for an entire shift. They can stick you in the corner of the store and just pick up the mess customers leave behind all day. There are some weeks in the year where you cant take any time off at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe POS training isnt very realistic. If you are new to retail it is not helpful. There is no actual training on how to fold certain things and take general care of the merchandise unless you work in jewelry. Let the sales force anonymously review the management. A lot goes unreported because people are scared to tell. The customers should just get the coupons, its ridiculous to not give them to everyone. Actually clean the store, vacuuming isnt enough. Dust gets all over the shelves of the shoe department. Awful stains in the dressing rooms as well as smells. The mirrors are always disgusting as well. Actually care about who works for you instead of just caring about the credit card sign ups. UPDATE YOUR COMPUTERS. THEY CRASH, THEY ARE SO SLOW.

Opportunity for some, sink hole for most

Supply Chain Team Coach (Current Employee)
Columbus, OH

I have been working at J. C. Penney full-time

ProsCareer opportunity board and discounts.

ConsPoor communication, unequal treatment some management gets better hours more pay while others are overworked and uncompensated. Interns who take trainee management positions and eventual full time positions are considerably more favored while given the easier positions/ better shifts/better salaries.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlace your strengths where your needs are and compensate accordingly. The guy working 12+ hour days and on an off shift should make more than the new guy working barely over 8 on 1st shift.

My time with the company was enlightening.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at J. C. Penney full-time

ProsManagement staff really cared about their teammates. Even though they had to run a business, they took into consideration their teammates personal challenges on the home front.

ConsChallenges were the extended hours to staff the store when there wasn't enough customer traffic to warrant the extra costs of staying late or opening earlier than normal business hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that employees are acknowledged, praised for their dedication and hard work. The associates make the store in their everyday dealings with customers. A happy associate provides better customer service when they feel appreciated.

Not Bad for a First Job

Seasonal Sales Specialist (Former Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I worked at J. C. Penney part-time for less than a year

ProsFriendly supervisors and co-workers, super helpful and sweet. I had a seasonal position and it was super simple and fun interracting with customers, you get paid on training days, very simple to understand what you're doing.

Cons- Min Wage
- busy hours nobody is around to help.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more picky on who you hire because most employees never even showed up.
Raise wage.
