I have been working at J. Crew full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, open to discussion about product pros/cons, truly listen to how the company can grow their people/product.

    Cons

Technology is sub par. The POS systems, operating systems, HR systems are all outdated or way behind the times. Extremely inefficient, difficult to manage in live time, and the overall speed of the platforms are something from the late 90's. They need someone young and fresh to introduce these new advancements out there to the company. I'm fairly confident that the people at the helm mean well by all their attempts, but they simply do not get it and are behind the times.

    Advice to Management

The devil is in the details. Take notes from seasoned veterans, learn all you can on the brand and product, and reach out to everyone you can to learn the in's and out's I daily operations. There is no sufficient training programs; kind of a "fly by the seam of your pants" mantra here. Not too reliable. The executives will expect you to know-all, regardless of proper training.

I have been working at J. Crew full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great discount, beautiful product and for the most part, awesome clients; I have become friends with several of them. As a manager, there is no blackout for PTO which is unheard of in retail. PTO is moxed with sick days so as a newbie you will get 4 weeks of paid time off plus 5 extra holiday days (paid) on any given fiscal year.

    Cons

J Crew tends to hire older managers , think 50 + years old who are extremely difficult to manage if you are younger than them (which is my case). The company is so afraid of getting sued that they let people get away with a lot of crap while you are stuck dealing with under performing managers. As a Store Director, you better be ready to become a nanny, you will not be able to coach managers/asssociates or hold them accountable since JCrew lets them underperform without consecuences; coach them and you will have HR knocking on your door thw very following day. Because company just went through re structuration, payroll keeps being cut but workload keeps increasing; hard to stay motivated/engaged when there is only so much you can do.

    Advice to Management

You should really analize situations on a deeper level and reward employees who are doung a great job and get rid of underperforming managers who pull the rest of the team down.

I have been working at J. Crew full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I love the positive vibe of the upper mamagement and the benefits are great. You get PTO virtually immediately upon hire. Even PT associates get PTO.

    Cons

The company has made some changes but you adapt or you move on. I adapted.

    Advice to Management

Be a strong but positive leader and really push your team while treating them with the utmost respect. You get what you give.

I have been working at J. Crew (More than a year)

    Pros

JCrew has a great work environment. Employees (for the most part) like each other and it can be fun to come to work.

    Cons

The staff isn't always on the same page. Not much upward advancement available in a stale market.

    Advice to Management

Communicate management style. It can be frustrating for every manager to say something different about the same things. More sales floor awareness.
