    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

Pleasant environment, nice merchandise (although that seems to be changing), decent discount.

    Cons

Part timers really at the mercy of management regarding hours or rather lack of hours. Always hiring new part timers and then cutting hours. Many managers are mediocre and do not lead by example and do not really understand the flow of business. Absolutely no room for advancement and favoritism is certainly played. Lack of training of new hires is a huge problem and should be addressed at the corporate level. Constant discounting of merchandise is confusing to the customers and the quality seems to be decreasing along with the price points.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better training for all managers, be more consistent with pricing and address the needs of the part timers at the retail level. Better daily communication regarding markdowns and policy changes and overall stronger management, with retail backgrounds.

I have been working at J. Crew full-time

    Pros

Great corporate perks including product discounts, flexible PTO policy, good health insurance and weekly free massages. Depending on which division you are in, hours are reasonable.

    Cons

Very corporate, hierarchical structure. Some divisions have room for growth, but in others its almost impossible. Top management should engage more with lower level reports.

I worked at J. Crew part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Employees get a great employee discount on merchandise. You get to be the first to see new merchandise before it hits the sales floor

    Cons

Raises and promotions are hard to come by. Since there is typically a key holder, two managers and a store director, higher positions are very limited

I worked at J. Crew part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I enjoyed my time working here. I learned a decent amount about sales and really got to improve my customer service skills. The shifts are short which is nice. The discount is amazing and it kills me to pay full price now that I don't work there anymore.

    Cons

I had problems with inconsistency in management and their lack of organization. Mainly when it came to closing the store. We would be kept for over an hour straigtening and fixing minute details with one manager while another would do a scan and call it a day. I also felt the commission for the sales staff vs. sales support were unfair. I started as sales and then moved to sales support. When you are sales support you do not make commission, even if you sell something. You only get compensated for opening j. crew cards, which is much more difficult.

    Pros

generous discount and employee allotment. Co-workers tend to be supportive and make the atmosphere fun. J. Crew does a wonderful way of introducing and educating employees on new products. Quality of clothing is great and makes it easier to sell.

    Cons

Management can diminish the workplace culture. Routine becomes mundane doing the same thing, lateral growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure that the management that you enlist is fair. Difficult to navigate the corporate maze because of the fear factor instilled by management.

I worked at J. Crew part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, decent wages, good discount. 50% off sale and 30% off most full prices items with a few exclusions. Managers, at my store, cared about and had pride in their jobs.

    Cons

Way too flexible with customers. Very snobby and rude shoppers with only the occasional nice one. It looked like my managers put in a lot of extra hours, so I would never want to move up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promotions for employees are a very good way to push sales, it made me actually put effort into my part time job there.
