I worked at J. Crew part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

At the time, J.Crew allowed personal shoppers to make the base associate pay plus some commission. As PS you had great freedom to be creative and offer client's a little more customer service tailored to their needs. There were goals to be met, but the managers were never overbearing when trying to enforce them.

    Cons

You are still a sales associate and you will have to deal with the foes that come with working in a retail job at a middle market store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate should take more info from those on the ground level to improve their CRM and eliminate waste.

I have been working at J. Crew part-time

    Pros

The vast majority of J.Crew clothing is well-made and can be timeless in style. Managers are willing to help if you push them and show a desire to learn and improve.
-Great discount, which gets better when switching to different seasonal lines
    -J.Crew hires fun, helpful people
    -Flexible schedule
-Hard work pays off with managers/co-workers (doesn't go unnoticed)

    Cons

-On call shifts are terrible (if corporate knew how each store worked then sufficient hours would be given to the stores to accomplish goals)
-Sometimes have to push for proper training (on POS, operations procedures, standards)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

*-Have clear-cut paths for those that want to earn a place in management
*-Make a knowledgeable associate into a trainer and schedule him/her on shifts with new hires to get them up to speed within 2-4 weeks (especially important for new seasonal hires)
*-Hire on part-time cashiers for busy days so that the sales staff can actually sell and meet/exceed goals
*-Reward associates for meeting and exceeding realistic goals
*-Get rid of email capture (no customer wants to give their email, not asking creates a more pleasant experience that the customer wants to revisit again and again

I worked at J. Crew part-time for more than a year

    Pros

What I loved about working at J.Crew was the people I worked with, we all got along well. Also, getting discount was the best part.

    Cons

Not enough pay, worked there for 2 years and only received a few cents raise.
Made me work closing shifts mostly every weekends just because of how satisfied they were with my recovering skills.

I worked at J. Crew full-time for more than a year

    Pros

great discount. decent benefits - 21 days PTO for full-timers first starting out. compensation was competitive, i felt comfortable with what i was making and later found out i probably could have asked for more.

    Cons

the main challenges for me were that the company values did nothing to empower or build the associates. they were treated as a dime per dozen, were paid poorly, and barely had hours for them. Most made less than $9.25 with no obtainable bonus structure. Sure, we had a good time and met great people but after a few months working there, everyone realized how direction-less it became. The main reason I left was because the expectations were near impossible and i consistently went home feeling like i didn't do a good job, when in reality their expectations were very unrealistic. How is it possible to successfully staff a store for great customer service and preventing LP issues with only enough hours for 6 people the entire day in an over 6000 sq ft location?

I have been working at J. Crew full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Really good work/life balance.
Great location for the HQ in the East Village.
Senior IT leadership are making changes for the better.
    Nice amount of vacation days.

    Cons

The place is a bit of a circus sometimes. There are a bunch of very dramatic personalities that can be tough to deal with.
Positive changes are hard to implement due to the very political nature of the environment.
People get very comfortable with confusing and roundabout processes that constantly stop working.
The original codebase is very tough to work with.
You must be a self motivated person to change things or else be trapped constantly patching broken systems.
Compensation is way below market value.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The retail business is changing and online is the way to go. Stop alienating technology people from communicating with people at the top.

I worked at J. Crew part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great, up-beat work environment that was really fast paced
Really good discounts on clothing and accessories through employment
Friendly managers and many of the other associates went to college in the area
    Easy commute to the mall

    Cons

Pay was very low and "commission" wasn't enough to even be called that (.05%)
Men's section usually only had one associate working so very fast paced
Parking at the mall is hard, especially during rush hours
Managers are sometimes hard to get along with, but overall they were friendly

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a new compensation model. Current one is good only because of the discounts on clothes, but the only way to get discounts is if you spend the money you are earning on them so you walk away with very little comp at the end of it all. For people looking to earn money and save it, this is not the best option

    Pros

CEO is very inspirational. The fashion is amazing with an amazing discount to follow!

    Cons

Upper mgmt is very political. Many individuals believe in the brand, ceo and what it represents yet leave due to the the lack of support given by upper mgmt and politics that go behind decision making.

    Pros

    Generous discount.
Better than other retails that push opening credit cards and etc
    Quality & fashionable clothing

    Cons

Upper management is not doing their job right. Too many layers to go through for promotion and always take so much time. They do not recognize or appreciate good employees.
So much paperworks and training but not enough time given.
Store directors omit a lot of training for associates.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Market directors and regional directors are not getting involved enough with stores.
    Serious discommunication.
    Value your "good employees"
Get rid of your "lazy, robotic employees"
