I have been working at J. Crew full-time

    Pros

Competitive employee discounts… health insurance for full time and part time dental. With stores opening there is alot of room to grow and advance. The time and effort the company outs in to training and developing you is great. They really want to create and promote a healthy knowelegeable working environment.

    Cons

Expect you to make miracles happen with low payroll. But that is typical in retail. They also have unrealistic expectations of gaining clients and having events in suburban stores

I have been working at J. Crew part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I've been working for J.Crew for the past year and a half and I have to say it's been a great experience. I got hired only a few weeks after I turned 18 so it was a big privilege since most 18 year olds are still working in fast food or a supermarket. Pay wasn't bad for someone my age. The discount you get is amazing as well since the clothes are quite expensive. The environment is nice, clean cut, and a classy clientele. Clothes are really nice as well. I never wore J.Crew until I started working their and fell in love with the clothes. J.Crew is now my favorite brand.

    Cons

As with all retail hours are never steady. One week you'll have 25 hours then the next week you'll have 8. Then the week after that you'll have 12 hours. You'll only get steady hours at J.Crew if you're a manager. On call shifts can be kind of annoying as well. Sometimes they'll take them when you least expect them.

    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

When the store is busy, it can be very exciting and fulfilling to help customers. You will have a lot of opportunity to meet and work with different people and solve unique problem.

    Cons

Management can play an instrumental role in your experience. When there is downtime or low customer volume, your experience can sometimes feel like you are doing unimportant or menial labor (stocking). Management can sometimes breathe down your neck and be unnecessarily hands on with relatively simple tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Staff separate jobs for working on the floor and stocking shelves, or merchandising in store.

I have been working at J. Crew

    Pros

Fun and exiting work. It was my first time doing retail so I came in a little more unprepared, but I got adjusted very quickly

    Cons

The hours are not too bad at all, but the company takes a lot of pride in its product and this can lead to overpriced items

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Great job

    Good First Retail Job

    I worked at J. Crew

    Pros

I worked part-time at the Mag Mile store in Chicago, the pay was about average but in general I prefer commission. The managers weren't terribly flexible on scheduling, but again, no worse than any other chain store. The biggest perks were the clientele, mostly tourists but the occasional celebrity, and the major discounts on clothes.

    Cons

Like any retail job it was a bit boring and repetitive, scheduling could be a nightmare, no commission means the pay is relatively low, but stable, and there didn't seem to be any effort to give associates responsibility that could lead to a management position.

I have been working at J. Crew

    Pros

    -Employee discount
    -Good rate
    -Fun environment
-60's list (Items you can get for 60% off!)
    - Flexible schedule
    -Good work and school balance
    -Management is really nice

    Cons

-LONG hours( Even when you shift if short they always ask you to stay longer!)
-VPS's(Very Personal Stylists) are extremely rude and always steal your commission and make you do the crappy work like folding and go backs
-They often have sales where the customer get the same or MORE of a discount than employees!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When there are in store sales and promotions employees should get their discount ON TOP of the sale price!

    Pros

Good vacation time even for new hires.
    Good benefits
Corporate office is a good location in New York City. Good discount on clothes.

    Cons

Vacation time and sick time are rolled in to one, so usually end up losing time because you need to save time for sick days. People working there can be immature and "don't read books, only magazines"
