I have been working at J. Crew part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The managers are always doing their best to make the work and training environment fun and energetic. During training and all-store meetings, we would usually have group activities where some of the associates would style another associate as if they were styling a customer, which helps everybody to get an idea of the top looks of the season and how to sell the merchandise we offer. If you want to work here, you really have to like the brand and be a good representation of it; the employee discount is phenomenal because they really expect you to buy and wear J. Crew clothes in order to set a stylish "example" for customers. They're usually pretty good about not scheduling you outside your availability and granting the days off you request, with the exception of busy holidays (which is true of most retail, unless you're one of the lucky few who put in their requests WAY in advance). Associates and managers are a diverse bunch and I have encountered only a few, isolated & far-between incidents of sexism--employee HR reports are taken seriously.

    Cons

I was hired as a part-time Sales Support Associate, and I remained part time even when I switched departments. I had a large availability and they scheduled me for ALL of my availability. I was part-time but still working 5 days a week, 8-9 hour shifts. If you're back-of-house (stock, merch, etc), they're going to schedule you EVERY DAY you're available, trust me. Its nice to be relied on, but I had to take a day off of my availability to catch up on some needed sleep.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to balance your employees a little bit more. Its strange when there are two employees who work in the same department and are both part-time, yet one is complaining about not receiving any hours and the other is complaining about being stressed and overworked.

I have been working at J. Crew part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The clothes are great and it's easy to work here when it's a brand you believe in. The store discount is pretty great too!

    Cons

Working the sales floor can get pretty monotonous when there's not a lot of traffic going in and out of the store.

I worked at J. Crew part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The managers were understanding and helpful. The employee discount was really nice as well. My fellow sales associates were friendly and knowledgeable.

    Cons

The hours would fluctuate a lot - some weeks I would get a sufficient amount, and some weeks I would not. I would have appreciated a little more training or education about the clothing. The pay wasn't great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While you generally do a good job, you should provide a bit more training to employees. And be more up front about how many hours a part-time employee can expect to have each week.

    Pros

Employees are treated fairly and valued for their opinions.

    Cons

Management turnover creates chaos, simple guidelines are gospel fact, and the top sales person can lose their job over a silly infraction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find experienced, level-headed managers and do whatever it takes to keep them.

I have been working at J. Crew part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I have worked at other retail chains and J. Crew has been the best. The dress code is rather flexible considering you don't have to wear exclusively J. Crew items when working and the discount is very generous.

    Cons

Scheduling is very unpredictable: one night you will close and then the next morning you will be scheduled to open the store, or one day your shift will be cut early but the next week you will be scheduled 6 days.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have 770 staff visit retail stores more often.

I worked at J. Crew part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I can only speak to my store/ district: good leadership, good wages for part time, upbeat, responsible co workers and managers, and not difficult work.

    Cons

Not much room for growth unless you're willing to put in crazy hours, a little boring, horrible rude customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promos for employees were the only things that made me have any desire to work harder.

    Pros

I really love their clothes, so it was fun to interact with customers and help put together outfits. I got to be myself. The managers were very flexible and definitely cared about the employees.

    Cons

Sometimes hours were scarce. The job could be overwhelming on busy days or holidays.

I have been working at J. Crew full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Regarding working at the corporate headquarters: very generous vacation time, nice company 401K match, summer Fridays, creative and talented people, industry -leader CEO

    Cons

Retail sector is up and down so at times can be stressful if sales are not great. It can be hard to move up, or to move to another department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't overlook promoting from within over going to the outside.
