    Soul destroying

    Shelf Stacker (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsThey did a nice breakfast in the canteen. That is about it really.

    ConsPoor wage.
Management think they are something special.
Have to work like a dog constantly.
They watch everything you do, how long you take for break everything.
Literally the most boring, soul destroying atmosphere when you are just stacking shelves, you cant even talk to the people you are working with.

Good initially but lately it has become very money minded company and doesn't care enough for employees. Lot of changes.

    Business Analyst (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsGood Brand Name, good colleagues, good veriety of work

Conseducation/skill is not so much important, appraisal process is for managers, not colleagues

Advice to Senior Managementbe realistic and look out for bad middle managers

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not suited to highly motivated people

    Senior Analyst (Former Employee)

ProsThe company genuinely cares about you as an individual and arranges plenty of social events to increase morale.

ConsEnthusiastic and motivated people will find they cannot progress because they will emerge under ceiling of people who have been in their roles for far too long and don't share knowledge.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart getting people who have been in roles too long out of them and doing something else, sharing information is critical to business continuity. For a company that preaches the importance of continuity, you need to address this. It is also increasing your employee churn when motivated individuals leave because they come up against managers who don't want them to shine in case people realise that they aren't actually doing well.

    It was what it was.

    Night Shift (Current Employee)
    Newhaven, England (UK)

ProsAs a Night Shift worker, my lunch breaks were also counted as paid hours. A small perk of the job, but still nice to have.

ConsNot always appreciated - often feel undermined!

Advice to Senior ManagementYou should teach your store managers, especially the Night Shift managers, to have some respect for their employees!

Ok as a job, never a career

    Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee)
    Rhyl, Wales (UK)

    ProsRelatively flexible workload,
    Good mix of people,
Breaks and pay are reasonable for sector,

ConsLittle chance of real career advancement,
Insufficient time to do everything by the book,
    Work can quickly become repetitive,

Advice to Senior ManagementTry doing the job of ordinary colleagues whilst adhering to Sainsbury's policies and still hitting targets.

Good first job but soul-crushing work

    Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

    ProsEasy interview process
    Met some genuinely lovely people
Had a laugh with most of the employees
You knew who your supervisors were and knew you could ask them for help
Excellent training, at a good pace so everyone understood everything
Generally well looked after until a manger had it out for you

ConsNew management came in and dismissed a lot of people unfairly
    Pay wasn't great
Working on the checkouts is mind-numbing, you just watched the clock in the hopes of time flying by
Bad discount of only 10% for the amount of work you do
Horrible customers sometimes, but that comes with working in retail

Advice to Senior ManagementThe unfair dismissal of employees is a joke.
Bump up the discount, 10% is terrible.

Working for Sainsbury's pays the bill but nothing else.

General Assistant Night Shift (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsThere is no pressure at work.
    There are no challanges.
You can refuse to do overtime.
Job security unless you are a notorious sick leave taker.
    Student friendly environment.
Great flexibility of working hours regarding to study.

    ConsMinial job.
    No challange.
Incompetency of management from Shift to Store manager level.
The management is a bunch of "yes men", they only do whatever their bosses tell them to do thus they do not try to attempt solving problems. For this reason ideas are often ignored.
Positive discrimination towards a certain minority, religious group (Shift ratio is approx 5:1 where 1 is European including UK) despite there is not many people live from this religious group in this particular area. As a result there is no team spirit, no outside work activities to build one.
Christmas parties are held in the stuff rest room, seriously!!!
No career prospect within above team leader or department manager level, even when you have qualifications, You are better off applying from the outside.
No tallent recognition, no encouragement to step up on the carrer lader.
The appraisal is a joke the annual bonus is worth approx two days of work (£100). The pay rise has been approx 1% since Justin King reign (in comparison his starting bonus was £500.000 in shares).
The only benefit provided by Sainsbury's is the 10% stuff discount (M&S it's 20%).

Advice to Senior ManagementMy only advice is to get a Managment text book and look up Hertzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory and see whether those motivator factors are met at Sainsbury's.

Great company but work needs to be done

    Customer Assistant (Current Employee)
    Durrington, England (UK)

Prosgreat company to work for and the pay is really good if you are in one of their local stores. Really easy to transfer to other stores and even easier to move up within the company.

ConsThe uniform is awful - polo shirts and black trousers; nice if we were in shirt and ties like every other supermarket name. the workload is too much because some stores are so under staffed and some employees will not partake in all aspects of the supermarket (In a local store every person including managers are expected to work on the shop floor and put out stock etc.)

Advice to Senior Managementhire more staff, get a better uniform and train staff more
