    Pros

    Colleague discount
    Pension scheme
    Some wonderful colleagues
    Good progression (in some areas)
Used to be a well respected company with good values.
Brilliant working relationship between department managers and their direct reports

    Cons

    Company standards falling rapidly.
Product quality not as good as it used to be.
Managers made to feel they have to work 12 hour days every day.
It was deemed acceptable to contact managers at any time of day or night even if it was their day off or they were on holiday.
Senior store management seemed to be above the rules
Senior management very quick to deflect blame if anything went wrong.

    Advice to Management

Bridge the gap between senior store management and department managers
    Practice what you preech.
Dont spend all day in an office and then pretend great results are a reflection of your hands on management when actually it is department managers running the branch and training the colleages.

Most new contacts rarely exceed 16 hours per week
    Poor training
Health and safety not taken seriously
Fresh goods are rarely refrigerated properly.
    Poor record keeping.
In house feedback is hand writing matched to discover who thinks what about the job and is later use to pressurise people into leaving.
Mangers ask for opinions and if they don't like what you say, they increase work load for everybody
    Unrealistic exception's.
Managers take advantage of colleagues good will.
No realistic career progression if you are of good character
Job related qualifications a con to swindle
Most managers have serious personality and empathy problems

    Advice to Management

Retrain Store managers and Department managers in respecting people, and treating them as human beings as apposed to detritus.

    Pros

    45minute paid break. Steady work.

    Cons

Lights always turned down low to save company money, very difficult to concentrate and stay awake at an already antisocial and unnatural hour of work.
Once you are in a position it's very unlikely that you will be able to move to another, they would rather hire someone new and keep you doing what you know. Holiday is not flexible and they will constantly try to make you take holiday to suit themselves rather than when you want it

    Advice to Management

Working at night requires good lighting to stay awake and alert, stop thinking of your bonuses and saving money, start thinking about the conditions of the staff on the graveyard shift

    Pros

    - £7.09 a hour
    - Plenty of overtime
    - Plenty of holiday time
    - Available Profit Share
    - Discount Card / Bonuses

    Cons

    - Rude Customers and drunken idiots on the late night shifts
    - Low chance of promotion unless you studied animal care or some other ridiculous unrelated uni topic
    - School behavior from fellow colleagues, constant back chatting about each other
    - Lack of rotation, could see yourself stuck on the same till for a 8 hour shift whilst others rotate in front of you
    - Management choose customers over staff if a situation arises

    Advice to Management

    - Stop treating your staff members like dirt and respect fellow human beings
    - Do your job properly, rotate staff and create a nice place of work
    - Advice opportunity big or small and make progress available
    - Stop calling staff off there holidays expecting them to come in and if they say no you use it against them

    Pros

Pay as a driver is ok. Better than the usual retail in store jobs

    Cons

There are not enough qualification's available to aid progression

    Advice to Management

You need to really invest in the people not just say it, Qualification's should be available such as NVQ'S. School leavers with no qualifications are stuck at the bottom whilst university graduates who studied animal science are able to get management jobs straight away. Management change location too often to make a difference and goals of staff are forgotten.

    Pros

In depth training which covers different topics
    Friendly and helpful staff
Enjoyed serving and communicating with customers
    Good hourly wage

    Cons

My clock in number did not work the first week and had to be rectified. As a result I had been underpaid on my first wage slip. This took 6 weeks to sort out and found myself phoning up many times.

On the first time of working outside on the trollies; they had not realised I hadn't been trained.

6 months is quite a long time to wait for staff discount.

Tills were sometimes not prepared with printer rolls, shopping bags or buzzers to alert supervisors.

It was emphasised not to discuss personal matters, yet staff talked to me about me leaving on the shop floor when I was serving customers, this was not professional.

Organisation and communication needs to be improved in store.
