ConsSome of our operational tools need updating to increase work efficiency

    Product Manager

    Product Manager (Former Employee)
    Raleigh, NC

ProsGreat people, great products, great place to work in Morrisville, decent pay

Conschallenging work/life balance at times, lots of turn over, seem to operate Q-to-Q letting go great people while continuing to hire others. Lots of Sr Management changes

Advice to Senior ManagementStabilize the culture. Trust in the people. Be more long-term thinking - stop the knee jerk reactions every quarter...

    Not a bad place.

    Principal Engineer (Former Employee)
    Santa Rosa, CA

    ProsChallenging projects.
    Entrepreneurial environment.
    Cooperative employes.
State of the art equipment and opportunity to work with highly skilled engineers.
Always had a chance to see how the business end operates when working in a very technical area.

ConsMoney is tight which can make it difficult to institute improvements.
They are in the process of down sizing some areas. If you are unlucky enough to be working in one of those areas your job could be a risk. As expected this is no different from any other company in the same finical situation.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompanies that were acquired whose products are not telecom related but proffiable should be given more finical resources relative to the revenue that division brought into the company.

Impressed with upper management direction and focus.

    Product Applications Engineer (Current Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsJDSU has chosen to only operate in high growth markets and only if they can be the #1 or #2 player in that market. Management has a clear vision and works diligently to achieve the well communicated goals.

ConsSome divisions have limited growth potential for employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe cumbersome annual self-review process is meaningless and has absolutely no bearing on promotions or raises.

    Lots of experience.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Milpitas, CA

ProsLots of experience and a very knowledgable and likeable team. The food on site is a bore and it's quite a drive to get something to eat

ConsHard to move up ladder and get new ideas or processes going; the big guys get all the good parking spots too

Advice to Senior ManagementRemain simply a telecom company

Management has a lot of learning to do!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Germantown, MD

ProsJDSU has great people! People that will bend over backwards to do a good job and put in the right amount of time and effort. Also, the compensation is pretty good when you bust your butt. They are willing to negotiate when they really want you!

ConsThe management team do not understand how to run a $1.0B+ business. Due to all the M&A activity, you've got small potatoes managers trying to strategically run a huge business. The communication of strategy beyond the CEO and his staff is extremely poor, the worker bee doesn't have any idea how what they do on a daily basis does anything good for the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement - learn to communicate your strategy, identify clear objectives that you organizations can rally behind to ensure that they are successful.

Good place to work but has been going down hill

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood senior management although a lot of great leaders left back in 2001. Great working atmosphere yet quality work can be accomplished.

ConsNeedless to say the business has not been steady and future is still unknown. This is may be out of control of management at JDS, although sales function seems to be weak in knowing what is happning.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on developing a better relationship with existing customers and look for a chances to branch out into other fields.

    Still evolving as a company

    Senior Director (Current Employee)
    Milpitas, CA

ProsMedium company atmosphere - easier access to executives than bigger companies.
Hired a number of very strong executives in two of the largest business units.
Managers who are smart and passionate about driving results receive good recognition.
Jobs are broad so they provide great breadth of learning in mid levels management jobs than you get in bigger companies.
Great opportunities for people who want to create and build vs. maintain.
Values leaders with strong domain knowledge.

ConsCompany needs updated infrastructure - never fully caught up from the 2001 downturn.
High variability of how positive your work experience is. Completely dependent on who your boss is. There isn't a unified culture due to legacy of acquisitions.
Certain businesses are in very, very tough industries and markets.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed a vision at a company level.

    Overworked, but flexible

    Channel Manager (Former Employee)
    Richardson, TX

ProsThe best reason to work at JSDU was the flexibility to make my own hours, and leave work whenever and whyever I needed to. No one clocked me in or out, and as long as I got my work done, no one minded what I was up to.

ConsThe main downside is directly related to the upside - although I could work whenever I wanted to, I was so overloaded that I had to work all the time. I covered a territory well beyond my abilities, experience, or training, and that was the norm.

Advice to Senior ManagementI suggest considering the work loads of your salespeople before doing more 'reductions in force' or 'streamlining'. A company can only work so lean. Bring back the support staff, reduce the complexity of the compensation model, and let your salespeople do what it does best - SELL.
