Corporate Owned is a political popularity contest

    Multi Office Manager (Former Employee)

ProsLoved the seasonal position and the customers. Usually got the hours you wanted.

ConsManagement are all about themselves not about the employees. They don't care if they take every penny the customer has and pay their employees very poorly. No communication and they do not like to take responsibilities for their decisions. Better to blame it on someone who works very very hard for them. They talk a lot about taking care of the hard working empoloyees but never follow through.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour lower level managers and your employees are the ones who make that business work not the higher managers who don't even know how to do a tax return, realize this before you lose every strong person you have.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

The lowest salary of my life

    Seasonal Tax Preparer (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsGood educational courses...nice tax preparation software

ConsAwful salary ...poor management...not to mention the bonus..its just ridiculous. The hours are not guaranteed...they may call you short notice to ask you not to show up at the office.

Advice to Senior ManagementTraining needs to be provided to Supervisors...they must learn people skills. They should make distinction in their employees when it comes to most educated tax preparers.

Franchises are okay but Corporate owned is a MESS

    Seasonal Tax Preparer (Current Employee)
    Seattle, WA

ProsFranchise- Known Brand, tight knit offices, room for advancement ( take on more duties that look good on a resume) great training, organized, positive reinforcement, owner sponsored events

ConsCorp- Many hours ( 65 hour work weeks) High turn over rate, corporate decisions that make no sense to the management and to the preparers, constantly fluctuating office hours, no training ( SERIOUSLY?) you lock us out of the system we need to actually prepare the returns and need permission complete the return. If you don't trust us, you shouldn't trust us to handle peoples financial records. even though you have worked for the company brand and the system, unless you worked for a corporate location, they don't recognize that you ever worked for them, and you are treated like a brand new know nothing employee... until they need something, then its like " well you have worked for us, you should know" but I cant claim any of the returning preparer packages because I didn't work for them.... should have taken my experience to h&r. they recognize it no matter where you come from. they just train you on their system. and they pay more.

Advice to Senior ManagementLISTEN TO THE PEOPLE YOU PAY NOTHING TO. THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND ASKING FOR. SINCE WE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO DEALS WITHT HE PUBLIC AND ACTUALLY DO THE WORK.

    Unprofessional & unorganized

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsIts an ok job if you really want to go and just do nothing but still get paid

ConsThey really dont care about their employees and offices, they dont pay you for all your hours, they dont supply offices with basic stuff such as printers, paper and internet, area managers still money from company, they have all their family members working with them and they all take advantage of that

Advice to Senior Managementthey should hire more professional managers who know what they do and do their work right instead of stealing from their company

    Learning everyday/no advancement opportunities

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSome of the employees are extremely helpful with each other as they must utilize their own resources.

ConsManagement does not have time to manage, they are so concentrated on cutting back on budgets including hiring staffing that do no know how to prepare tax returns, nor communicate with each other. Management will tolerate anything to keep a location open

Advice to Senior ManagementTraining should be mandatory for all employees. Some of the locations are workplace harassment by management at its finest. Even part time seasonal people are human beings and should be treated as such.

Working with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service was okay.

    Tax Preparer (Former Employee)
    Kokomo, IN

ProsWorking with customers, filing tax returns, helping customers get a larger tax return.

ConsWhen the government would withhold customers tax returns for whatever reason, some customers could get very angry, making it a very scary situation.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure the people you hire can do basic math.

    Not pleasant.

    Tax Preparer (Former Employee)
    Wareham, MA

ProsPay was a little higher than H&R Block. Tax prep program was easy to use.

ConsNo training whatsoever. Co-workers only knew how to ask the questions on the screen with very little tax knowledge. Very little support from franchise owners. Fees very high for services.

Advice to Senior ManagementAnnual tax prep classes are a must.

Not the best place to work

    Tax Preparer (Former Employee)
    Austin, TX

ProsThe job was only worth the work experience

ConsThe bad things about working there was the hours, Pay, & Co-workers

Advice to Senior ManagementLook into employees that might be abusing the system. I saw some stuff that other co-workers did and I was ashamed to be working along side of them.

Hated the customers - back office staff were terrible, but will always like the business.

    Tax Preparer (Former Employee)
    Cedar Rapids, IA

ProsThey always had great tax preparation software - better than H&R.
Its a job you can always get if you need one.

ConsBack office staff functions as management - even part-timers.
Preparers see shady stuff and are accountable - yet the CS and
management staff are only looking for revenue.
As I suspected , management was tolerant while we were so busy
and understaffed - at the end of the season, the snake in the grass
    showed its true self.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet off your behind and prepare some returns yourself when it is
busy. That is what a good manager does.

Back your people in the field - they are creating the revenue to pay for
your salary - you do not generate a dime taking your time setting up brunch
    after the season is over.
