Wouldn't do my personal taxes there- in lower half of Colorado

Office Manager/Tax Preparer (Current Employee) Marble, CO

ProsOwner (George) was great to work for, so was the old GM (Sheryal) that has been there as long as I have, until he hired this guy to take her place this year. He has no direction for employees but uses frightening tactics to reign and screams at all of us when we ask questions.

ConsCan not call owner with any problems anymore, or we'll get fired. He won't , or can't answer them for us.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake back your company before you don't have one. He has managed to run all your best and most knowledgeable employees off, as well as your venders that are important, and ALOT of customers, old and new. He scares everyone and uses GOD's name in VAIN !

    Browbeaters

Paid Tax Preparer (Former Employee) Little Rock, AR

ProsThe pro is that I love helping people and enjoy doing taxes. Love the job, very much dislike JH as an employer.

ConsPoor communication, lots of drama in our local offices, competition and backstabbing amongst employees. Constant threats company wide (Arkansas franchises) to take our meager bonuses, reduce out bonuses, dock us back to minimum wage for minor infractions, etc. The company is not making nearly as much money as they would like and so are taking it from the preparers and demeaning the company. At $9 an hour pay and average of $320 per return we prepare....

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit threatening and demeaning the tax preparers. Quit encouraging competition amongst the staff. Quit accusing the entire company of time theft when it is a very few employees doing it and mainly managers that are guilty.

    Extremely unprofessional!!

    Seasonal Tax Preparer (Current Employee)

ProsI signed up for the fall tax class in hopes of being hired for a seasonal position afterwards to make a little extra money for a few months. The class was very informational and affordable, and I learned a lot about the way that taxes work.

ConsPay was really low, even for a first time preparer. The commission scale was shown for a brief second during the "interview" and then was never to be seen again. There was never any training done by a person, it was all on the computer in the form of presentations and assessments. Which is fine, except that doesn't really prepare you for how to deal with people. I was told many times there would be role playing exercises so that everyone could get comfortable with the prompts we were to ask customers, but that never happened. It also seems like they will hire just about anyone, no matter if you did well in the class or not. I wouldn't trust anyone there doing my taxes for me, because there's a good chance they don't know what they're doing. But the thing that REALLY got to me was how unprofessional and inexperienced the management was. I'd never seen anything like it. There were so many simple things that my manager didn't know the answer to, and I never heard her directly answer anyones question. On multiple occassions I was told to be at the store at a certain time for training/work, and when I would get there, NO ONE was there. They would also leave the store for hours on end to "run errands" while the rest of us just sat their doing our training, with no one there for us to ask questions if we needed help. Then they would have their friends come into the store and just sit around being loud & laughing... I couldn't handle it and ended up quitting on my first "real" day of work, because as usual I showed up and no one was there.

A lot of personal liability for little pay

Professional Tax Preparer (Current Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsFree tax law education, flexible hours, interesting clients

ConsPay just above minimum wage, very disorganized management, conflicting solutions to issues, a lot of uncompensated training and meetings to attend

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your stuff together taxes are as straightforward as it gets. The answers to problems should be universal. Pay for preparers should be based on skill and personal liability. We are not "flipping hamburgers". We are expected to handle very identity sensitive information with professionalism. That deserves more than $8.00 an hour.

    Bad Morale

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood work-life balance especially out of tax season. Four day weekends for Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day. Get out at 3 PM on Fridays in the summer.

ConsJackson Hewitt has been struggling for quite some time. As a result, morale among employees at the corporate level is quite low. The database systems are numerous and out of date making it difficult to find and track information. The company seems slow to move forward and embrace new technology to make things more efficient.

Upper management should be part of a bad sitcom

Tax Preparer (Former Employee) Rice Lake, WI

ProsThe local manager was wonderful as was her direct superior.

ConsThe upper management was uncommunicative, disorganized, and sets unrealistic expectations for the low ranking employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together! Pay the employees on time, get them the materials they need to do the job, make sure the equipment is functional BEFORE you expect the doors to be open for the season.

Jackson Hewitt screwed me out of my commission

    RTRP (Current Employee) Whittier, CA

    ProsFlexible and convenient work hours

ConsWhen I was hired I was told that I would receive an hourly wage & commission percentage based on tax preparation fee. I was told that commission would be paid at the end of tax season. Well when I hadn't received a commission check after May 1st, I followed up & THEN I was told that I was mistaken and that she (The franchisee) didn't pay commissions to 1st year tax preparers

Advice to Senior ManagementSay what you mean & MEAN what you say. It not good business pratice to jerk people around.
