Immature company: pros and cons, but know what you're getting into

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Forest Hills, NY

I worked at JetBlue

ProsVery flat hierarchy and management is extremely receptive to ideas - even entry-level employees can make a difference in company policies and processes.

ConsIn the quest for company-wide equality, management positions are given the same benefits packages as frontline employees. Great deal if you're a frontline employee, but it's a huge loss if you're a management employee because your benefits aren't nearly as good as you'd get elsewhere.

ProsFlexible time off, good place to be if you get sick.

ConsHigher management (VP's) is old school and autonomous. Not very good at trickling down top management new ideas to middle management.

Great Customer Service company, but at-will employer status makes company a challenge to work for.

Flight Attendant (Current Employee)
Orlando, FL

I have been working at JetBlue

Pros-Great travel perks: crewmembers fly for free - as well their parents, spouse (significant other), and kids.
-Preferential bidding for flight attendant line holders.
-Company is 11 years old and new cities are being added often.
-Great route network.
-Competent business-savvy leadership.
-Great customers.
-Great product.

Cons-At-will employer in which you can be terminated for any or no reason.
-No union thus no protection in case of merger/acquisition.
-Operation is first...everything else is a distant second.
-Company does not back up their crewmembers during challenging times.
-Expensive medical benefits.
-Crewmembers are often fearful of write-ups for any passenger complaints.
-Imcompetent middle management
-Cronysism is encouranged.
-Leadership's communication towards crewmembers is often patronizing.
-The 5 values (Safety, Caring, Integrity, Fun, and Passion) are selective and don't apply to leadership.
-No accountability by leadership.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you take care of your crewmembers, they will take care of the customers; not the other way around.

Good company - poor department

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at JetBlue

Prosgreat benefits if you like to travel and the pay is pretty good. Company overall is a friendly and fun place to work in an exciting industry. Overall Leadership is good.

ConsMorale within IT is very low. No clear strategy and assumption that everything will be outsourced in the future. No career progression

Advice to Senior ManagementThe comapny has it's values, it would be good if they were followed in IT

Jetblue is only worth it if you are a pilot, flight attendant, GM or Supervisor.

Airport Operations (Current Employee)
Boston, MA

I have been working at JetBlue

ProsJetblue offers a great opportunity to travel to all levels of employees. The benefits package is better than what most businesses are offering, and management has not increased what employees are paying into it for the past two years. Management is extremely outgoing and willing to have face to face time with all levels of employees. On numerous occasions I have had the chance to speak with the CEO directly, it's extremely rare for that to happen in most organizations. Training is an important part of the company and employees are able to go into their jobs with confidence. Overall Jetblue is a good company to work for.

ConsEmployees in Customer service are given ZERO holidays, no sick days, and are penalized for being a minute late even if due to the transportation offered. The pay scale for customer service is laughable, who can honestly live off of $11 dollars an hour? And after three years of service only be making $13.10?? The company is in talks of switching over to HSA'S which would make their benefits package absolutely horrible. Jetblue is in desperate need of a union for ALL of its employees not just the pilots.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider the cost of living when deciding salaries. Yes you pay for parking, and are not increasing what people pay into their health benefits, BUT no-one can live off of a $11 dollars an hour, and after a year $11.75?? Three years $13.10?? That's insane.

JetBlue Becomes A Victim Of It's Success

Supervisor (Current Employee)
Fort Lauderdale, FL

I have been working at JetBlue

ProsAlthough not always successful people at JetBlue try to do the right thing. Enpowerment was a big thing during the early days of the airline, although it isn't as prevalent as it used to be.

ConsJetBlue was started by people who were willing to take a risk. Over time the Risk Takers have either been driven out or pigeoned hole and made to change over time. In their place has risen the Care Takers. People who require conformity and scorn enpowerment.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe best advertisement is "word of mouth" advertising. The growth of the Marketing Department indicates that we are looking for "cutzie" gimmicks instead of sticking to the best advertisement; a satisfied customer.

my take

Airport Ops (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at JetBlue

ProsThe opprotunity for flight benefits. makes for a better second job and part time if you can find it..

Consyou clean your own aircraft, you can end up with multiple jobs and only 1 pay check. you clean, cashier, take inventory/do stock. The polotics can get in the way of the job

Advice to Senior Managementre- evaluate your front lines and the compensation your providing them. When those stormy seasons come around and flights are getting canceled left and right and your employees are literally being spat on! you may want to pay them a bit more to deal with such B.S

Lets keep a union out of jetBlue!

Pilot (Current Employee)

I have been working at JetBlue

ProsBetter than average work environment. The people are for the most part very good to work with and everyone - for the most part - seems to be trying to work towards the same goal. It is a very tough time in the airline industry, but we need to be compensated fairly - and our current medical benefits are well below standard. Out pay is getting better, but still lags our competition. There needs to be some substantial, meaningful changes in this area or I am afraid that a union will be voted onto the property. Please don't let that happen -

ConsLower pay and benefits than other airlines

Truly mixed feelings

Customer Service Agent. . and Their Was No Feedback Except Negative When and If It Ever Happened. (Former Employee)
Boston, MA

I worked at JetBlue

ProsThe Benefits! The salary is relatvely better then the rest of the industry.

ConsUnexperience management. The head training liason didnt' even know how to work any of the Microsoft programms. How are you suppose to lead and train ifyou can't make a document.

Advice to Senior ManagementHow about we be on the same page. Don't say one thing to your employees and then a few months down the road say another thing. You lose major intergrity and resepect from your employees when you don't tell the truth .. Six months or a year!?
