I worked at Jewel-Osco part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice Community. Everyone gets along. Meet great people. A fantastic job for a person's first job or someone looking at moving up can look at management. Job is fairly laid back. It can and does get very hectic during the holidays. I can't remember how many times I was asked about turkey related questions during Thanksgiving. But it keeps you on your toes.

    Cons

The compensation for many of the jobs is not the best. There is a union so you must pay dues, which can be a bit odd for teenagers. Can work odd schedules. The music that is played in the store can get very repetitive.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco

    Pros

Hours are variable but decent based on one's position, availability, and seniority with the store. Most employees get yearly reviews and occasional raises based on performance and seniority. It will vary depending on department, position, and immediate supervisor. Fringe benefits can include paid vacations and personal days plus insurance depending on position and hours worked per week. I have another full-time job, so I work at Jewel-Osco anywhere from 4 to 12 hours per week.

    Cons

Some employees and personnel can be a little difficult depending on day, mood, and personality. Call-offs are common among associates, and you better hope you can find someone to cover your shift in a timely manner. Not as quick to de-merit employees for minor things as other companies may be, at least from my experience. It will depend on department and manager of course. Stealing is of course grounds for automatic termination. But all in all, if you are on time and do your job well, you will succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As much as possible, give employees a lot of hours based on their availability as well as store volume and budget.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Enjoyed working with my co-workers. Very flexible hours for students. Management was very willing to work around your schedule.

    Cons

The pay is minimum wage. Some of the customers can be very rude. Very tough scheduling vacation because the summer is taken quickly.

I worked at Jewel-Osco full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everyone was welcoming, like a family. Training was easy and helpful. The customers were also very nice.

    Cons

At times under staffed. Sort of took advantage of me being new, but I didn't mind doing to cleaning most of the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep hiring great people to represent the store. I enjoyed it while I was there.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work around schedules nicely, Weekly pay is a bonus, the staff is a full of college students who are friendly and easy going. Management for the most are easy going and reasonable. The work is pretty easy besides getting carts. 12 hour guarantee, decent part time job for college and high school students.

    Cons

Limited to 12 hours that's about all you get unless it's a holiday you might get a few more. Favorites are played and pay us horrible. Part time employees are drilled with huge Union fees for the first 3 to 4 months of working there. No real benefits for part time workers besides 15 min breaks every 4 hours. They make you get carts in hot weather, a foot of snow, doesn't matter. And you better go pen your working with someone willing to go outside because your going to get stuck with getting all of the carts outside. Managers don't do a great job of distributing work and jobs evenly. I've been working hard my tush off for almost a year and still have not offered me a cashier job.

I worked at Jewel-Osco part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Had a great time working here as a teenager. Moved up quickly and gave me confidence for the future. The pay was minimum wage and of course no very many raises to speak of.

    Cons

Take advantage of younger workers. They will give you more and more responsibilities but will only give you a minimum raise. They make up for it by being super flexible in hours.
