    I worked at Jewel-Osco

    Pros

Steady employment with regular hours. You know what is expected of you and are paid a decent wage (though in the low end of the scale for that type of work, often). Benefits and 401K are available, with some company-matching for the 401K.

    Cons

Not a lot of upward mobility in position for many jobs once you reach a certain level. A lot of lateral movement in management often means that there's inconsistencies that don't get addressed as each new person tries to tackle issues that remain unresolved from their predecessor.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Merit doesn't go unrewarded, awesome benefits, sustainable, family oriented, and generous company.

    Cons

Not enough praise for hard work and contributions to the compan. Very demanding not for someone with lots of obligations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Compensation should be distributed fairly. I know a few others that make more than me and we began at the same time. I have received rants and raves within my district, yet to be compensated for them with my last position.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You get a discount card, which includes 5% off all items and 10% off Jewel Brand items. In my current position, I work on the floor, so I do not need to be accounted for at all times, so I am free to take my break/lunch whenever I please. Very friendly environment between co-workers, however upper management is not very friendly.

    Cons

Inconsistent hours, poor management, and I was not provided with training that would later cause me not to get a promotion. Working all major holidays with overwhelming amounts of customers can be very frustrating. Upper management has high expectations from a small group of people.

I worked at Jewel-Osco part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice Community. Everyone gets along. Meet great people. A fantastic job for a person's first job or someone looking at moving up can look at management. Job is fairly laid back. It can and does get very hectic during the holidays. I can't remember how many times I was asked about turkey related questions during Thanksgiving. But it keeps you on your toes.

    Cons

The compensation for many of the jobs is not the best. There is a union so you must pay dues, which can be a bit odd for teenagers. Can work odd schedules. The music that is played in the store can get very repetitive.

I have been working at Jewel-Osco

    Pros

Hours are variable but decent based on one's position, availability, and seniority with the store. Most employees get yearly reviews and occasional raises based on performance and seniority. It will vary depending on department, position, and immediate supervisor. Fringe benefits can include paid vacations and personal days plus insurance depending on position and hours worked per week. I have another full-time job, so I work at Jewel-Osco anywhere from 4 to 12 hours per week.

    Cons

Some employees and personnel can be a little difficult depending on day, mood, and personality. Call-offs are common among associates, and you better hope you can find someone to cover your shift in a timely manner. Not as quick to de-merit employees for minor things as other companies may be, at least from my experience. It will depend on department and manager of course. Stealing is of course grounds for automatic termination. But all in all, if you are on time and do your job well, you will succeed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As much as possible, give employees a lot of hours based on their availability as well as store volume and budget.

    Pros

Enjoyed working with my co-workers. Very flexible hours for students. Management was very willing to work around your schedule.

    Cons

The pay is minimum wage. Some of the customers can be very rude. Very tough scheduling vacation because the summer is taken quickly.

    Pros

Everyone was welcoming, like a family. Training was easy and helpful. The customers were also very nice.

    Cons

At times under staffed. Sort of took advantage of me being new, but I didn't mind doing to cleaning most of the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep hiring great people to represent the store. I enjoyed it while I was there.
