May not be meeting their mission

Admissions Counselor (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Job Corps full-time for more than a year

ProsYou felt like you were doing something really valuable and helping youth rise above their situation by assisting them with entry into a program that allowed completion of education.

ConsFor the most part, youth coming out of this program are not much better off then when going in. The cost to the government is substantial. Placement in positions after the program could consist of a job but more than likely it would be an unpaid internship or placement in a private college.

Good company to gain entry level experience.

Career Transition Specialist (Former Employee)
Washington, DC

I worked at Job Corps full-time for more than 5 years

ProsDiverse staff and students to work with for those working in mental health.

ConsGovernment funded, limited funds allow for no raises EVER.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore consistency in enforcing the policies and rules. Inconsistent rules and policies, change to meet DOL's mandated numbers & goals. This consistently causes discord amongst students and staff.

Outreach and Admissions Specialist through government contractor

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Job Corps full-time for more than a year

ProsWorking with youth low income at-risk youth giving them the hope they never had for career success.

ConsMany of the Job Corps centers are old, run down facilities, with staff who have evolved into hard nosed, hypocritical people who are more concerned about performance measures and just getting a paycheck than the student. Heartbreaking.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe creative and remember who you are serving.
