I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

There are many benefits to working for a company like JCI. The benefits are pretty good, there are many great ways to get involved with the community, and many job opportunities and room for growth. They had many opportunities for training and development and an excellent tuition reimbursement program. They have regular performance reviews and take their employee survey very seriously.

    Cons

Johnson Controls is very large with many levels of hierarchy and that means sometimes decisions are very slow or very political. Work life balance wasn't great, but I think that really differed from department to department. Many of the HR policies left a lot of room for the supervisors and managers to be flexible with employees, however it meant policies were applied inconsistently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In my experience I had new leadership at multiple levels every year, and that made it difficult to make progress on goals or to develop long term strategy because it seemed every new leader had a new agenda and a new spin to make.

I have been working at Johnson Controls part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

If you get the right manager / leader it is an amazing company to work for
    Fast paced
Opportunity to get diverse work assignments and experiences
Tons and tons of great people in the organization

    Cons

If you get the wrong manager, life can be difficult
Constantly changing, so all ideas stall out or don't get implemented. Good or bad ideas suffer the same fate
Traditional, too many leaders want everyone to wait in line 30 years for a role
    Leadership is week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allowing cliques to succeed while traditionally acceptable in business is a recipe for disaster in a sharing economy driven by data. It is time for ruthless pragmatism and a true transparent meritocracy

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I like there intranet resources and training. So far the pressure has been pretty low. It seems aggressive to grow.

    Cons

The communication from top management to management to subordinate is lacking hugely. There is no clear picture of job/career growth potential. There is no training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace your subordinates like they're your biggest asset and make them a part of the big picture. Some employees really want to become a bigger part of the success of the company.

    Pros

    The pay is very good!
Ability to work remotely was a nice perk!

    Cons

When I was worked at JCI there was a huge lack of leadership! The direction we were supposed to keep heading in continually changed.
Professional development didn't really seem to be a focus.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues. Most managers support flexibility in terms of work location as long as you get your work done. There are definitely opportunities for career growth if you are inclined to seek them out.

    Cons

Change and ambiguity are constant. Very little stability in organizational structure in the 4 years I've been here and people are tired. Decisions take a long time and bureaucracy weighs us down. Employee communications could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent about decision-making processes.

    Pros

    Friendly culture
Have multiple business segments to work on different opportunities

    Cons

Most managers do not care about your career path
    Not much workplace diversity
Too short-term focused. Hurts long term innovation and growth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be truly strategic in seeing how mega-trends are going to change the markets. Drive innovation that delight the customers. Build stronger foundation and invest for talent in order to compete with our competitors.

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of smart and passionate people from all over the world combined with a truly global footprint provides a wide variety of interesting opportunities for both vertical and horizontal career growth. The combination of three related industries (building, auto, power), all linked by a common focus on efficiency, promotes innovation.

    Cons

Excessive focus on short term numbers and performance tends to favor unethical employees who are willing to massage numbers and game the system. It also hurts these employees who tell it like it is. The result is that problems can be swept under the rug to come back and haunt the company later.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As much as possible, shift focus away from quarterly results and instead encourage innovation, quality, integrity and long term customer satisfaction. Study after study has shown that bonuses for performance leads to focus on numbers (and encourages fudging. It does not drive innovation or quality. It rewards employees who are good at gaming the system. Rather than being addressed head-on, problems tend to get swept under the rug.
Make use of the great people you have. Encourage collaboration, not just competition, among business units and regions.

    Cons

not enough staff to complete work thoughtfully, no time for reflection, no outside training

Great opportunity, poor work life balance

Former Employee - Program Manager in Milwaukee, WI
Former Employee - Program Manager in Milwaukee, WI

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Because of the size of JCI, there are a lot of opportunities to develop yourself and your career in a lot of different directions. They are a large company that is on the forefront of creating sustainable environments and products & that is an exciting thing to be a part of. There is access to a lot of technology to get your job done effectively.

    Cons

Once you're salaried, the expectation is that you work a good bit of OT and are available evenings & weekends frequently. They pay is lower than what you can get for the same work at other organizations and pay raises are minimal. While the company supports personal development & most managers do as well, each manager determines if they are going to spend time or money on development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on customers first & profit will come. The hyper-obsessive focus on forecasting every week & squeezing every dollar out of every transactions IS felt by customers.
