Office politics are typical to the size of the company, leadership is aware and focused on removing political barriers.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company pays well and benefits are better than most.

    Cons

Most managers are more interested in networking up and preparing for their next job than they are in coaching/developing their employees. Of course, there are the rare exceptions. Constantly shifting priorities make it hard to focus and understand where how to measure impact.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to coach and develop your employees and make sure your manager values that contribution to the company.

    Cons

Not many full-time opportunities for interns who are graduating, but the experience is still worth it.

    Great company, but very silo'd

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Huge company with great benefits and very friendly and personable coworkers. Company consistently grew year over year and it was exciting to be a part of it.

    Cons

For how big a company it is, JCI operates in silos - that is to say that the different divisions don't talk to one another and it is very hard to transfer into another group. Stress can be high at times during the year, especially around Aug/Sept right before the close of the fiscal year. Variable pay (bonuses) don't start until you are at Sr Manager level, which is a very small % of the employee population...and even then the bonus % aren't very high and seldom get paid out at 100%

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more across the enterprise - between divisions. There should be a "One JCI" atmosphere instead of a division first attitude.

Good work-life balance. Will have opportunity to learn a lot and work with cutting edge technology.

    Cons

Company Politics, Hard to motivate people to work in faster pace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show employee recognition, you will see the company moving forward way faster than it is now.

    Pros

You can direct your own career path because of the multitude job positions within the company. Managers encourage innovation and continual learning.

    Cons

Since the company is so large you must be comfortable with networking and connecting with departments within the company.

I worked at Johnson Controls as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Open to new ideas. Employee empowerment seemed to be something they value. The work environment/layout is flexible.

    Cons

The main con I noticed was the integration of communication/organization, or the lack thereof. It seems to be too many ideas not thought out or fully communicated among all departments that may be affected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strive to become more integrated and organized with the planning and implementation of new operations.

    Pros

Great chance to develop new skills, grow in career, network and meet people, be challenged and explore opportunities

    Cons

Hard to get a full-time job when you start as an intern. No benefits as an intern and no chance of a raise

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring on the people you've invested time and money on and don't leave them hanging

I have been working at Johnson Controls as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

As an intern considering applying for full-time employment at JCI I have seen various parts of the business for over a year. Johnson Controls has:great benefits, a very nice working environment, positive sense of community, and helpful employees. Management is very keen on employee feedback as well from what I've seen.

    Cons

My only con is they are understaffed. Even as an intern I found myself working later than expected. Additionally, I have noticed that most directors have moved from other positions - many people have worked their way up to manager through JCI, but it seems like they reach out to other companies for most leadership roles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
