I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are decent. Company reputation for leading edge technology is good for career outlook. Some challenging problems in technology to keep the wheels turning.

    Cons

Lots of weekend and late night responsibilities. High stress, angry customers, erratic priorities. Poor work life balance.

Aggressively managed, and generally well-run. If you had a dollar to invest, you'd want KLA to manage it.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time

    Pros

Process-oriented, as well managed overall as I've seen any company. They make sure to get the most out of their investments, which also includes their people - which may not necessarily be what all employees are looking for. There are still people who want to do the right thing, who keep this place going.

    Cons

Politics abound. People doing consistently good work are not necessarily recognized. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil here more than in most places. There are a few who know what their doing, and seeming cadre of middling mgrs who ride them.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Company has some decent benefits. The job security is better than most companies and the companies industry strength is very good globally. One of the top equipment suppliers for many years. Training and support is fairly solid for the industry that is constantly growing and changing.

    Cons

With what the company considers a better than average benefit package the salary scale tends to be lower than most. The company has said they want to make employee's happier, but don't follow through on the biggest complaints. Working at development sites and busier sites has little benefit to employees besides more workload than other sites for similar pay. Management policies and upper management goals are typical for a large corp. which means squeezing the little guys for all they have including middle management. An expectation for management positions to last a year at most means there's a big problem that has never been addressed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employee's better and reward the hard work they do. Provide a better work environment for high stress positions and find a better way to reduce stress on management positions. Don't provide extreme bonus objectives to squeeze a few more pennies from your highest producing sites. Stop trying to make every division a profit center, it's just bad all around unless all you are trying to do is create more bonuses for Executives because that's all it seems to be about.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor

    Pros

    Bonuses
    Company has a well-established name/brand recognition
Austin is a great place to live

    Cons

A small satellite office a long way from headquarters.
Products that aren't core to the company, but the company won't spin them off.
Austin management that has little talent other than brown nosing and posturing. Lot of execu-talk and litle else, other than regular ass-kicking.
No leadership. No sense of appropriateness of applying management principals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave and make room for actual talent. Stop thinking you're good just because you have been given everything.

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This is my third time working for this company. Pros are the same as before: all the typical pros of working for a large company. In addition: great people, people are smart and work hard, great technology and engineering, good facilities. Overall, the company is well managed - which is hard to do in this kind of industry (small market size, high tech, low growth, lots of competition).

    Cons

All the typical cons of working for a large company. Some points to make: company values talent, not people, and treats individuals as disposable. Benefits are sub-par for the Bay Area. Compensation tends to be on the low side. No effective standards of conduct for management - about 20% of middle management staff are unprofessional psychopaths and it's impossible to hold them accountable. Rank order performance evaluations (archaic way to manage a work force) incentivizes people to work hard but not take risks or make tough decisions. People are discouraged from moving around within the company, so careers can stagnate. And a company culture that I can only describe as "unnecessarily mean".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider: offering more competitive salaries, adopting more modern work force management policies, adopting a corporate culture that is more supportive of high performance teams.
