I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the people are not so bitter, but the vast majority are. Those who are not, are managers who cannot get a job elsewhere
The IT managers seem to be able to survive with no great turnover. They kill what little enthusiasm is left. but you need to smile, keep up appearances and continue to go to the team lunches otherwise you may be accused of not being a team player. You need to keep playing the game
Knowledgeable people receive very little respect. It is really shocking but people get used to it since you can easily survive by playing up to your manager and do very little work. Get angry from time to time. It covers your backside and makes you look strong. Again, you need to play the game
Lots of ways to look busy and cruise the internet

    Cons

A really poor and abusive work environment where survival is the key and has been for years
There is really no incentive to do well nor to get ahead since it's never recognized. The key is to go slow and take your time. People have learned that over time
The IT management team do not listen nor do they appreciate the hard work of key individuals only political ones. Look at the complaints made in the annual review year after year. It never ever ever changes
IT low level and senior IT Managers have little credibility and really poor skills and are incredibly incompetent and disliked but play the game very well, so you need to do the same. I don't respect them. I never have. It makes me sick
People are not proud to work here. In fact it is the complete polar opposite. I just tell people I work in IT. I don't tell them I work here
There is an increasingly negative work atmosphere with people desperate to get out. Look around. Compare it to what it was 5 years ago. All the talent has long gone. It's just the old timers here and the sad and pathetic
It's a really terrible company to be associated with. Go do a search for all the bad reviews in this company. You'll find that half of them come from people in IT. They can't all be wrong can they ?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's hard to offer advice when so many have left the IT department or are inclined to leave if they can. Survival is the key. Remember, people may be nice to your face, but behind your back it's every man or woman for themselves. It's sad, but it's real

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

It makes me upset to see all these people complaining about IT at KLA when they're part of the problem and in fact nothing ever gets done. No one takes IT seriously. They are a joke of a division. The number of people who have spoken out are testament to that.

    Cons

The managers are horrendous to deal with. They feel entitled particularly the ones who have been here for years. Someone complained on this forum about the CIO's lack of ambition when in fact they themselves have stayed in the same SAP support position for years. I don't respect any of them. I've witnessed so many changes and lack of trust and respect everywhere.

Sadly it will never change. It is endemic. The only way to get ahead is to play the game i.e to look busy, big yourself up and put others down. It is the KLA IT way. Or should I say, it's their way or the highway.

I stay because I have to, despite all of that. It feels hopeless

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As someone mentioned earlier. Get rid of the poor IT managers who we all complain about. They are poisonous

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

As an old time IT guy, I have to go I've seen many people come and go but this place never changes for the better. We still have the same idiotic managers who have been here for years. We do the same work year in year out and the only way we move on is to stay on right side of the idiotic and clueless managers who still remain.

    Cons

Year after year, nothing changes. Same managers. I won't call them leaders because they don't lead. We complain in the annual review. but the managers choose what to publish if at all. It's completely abnormal. I read the review from HR below and they are completely deluded if they believe the only con is that there are layoffs from time to time. Whenever a complaint is made about IT management, they turn a blind eye. I feel so lost here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've given up. Even if I do things properly and focus on the so called values that you espouse, like HFC (Honest Forthright Communication) or lead by example, nothing changes. We complain or suggest things for improvement, but you don't listen. Only if it affects you will you do anything. You keep on saying, look at yourselves, but we're the not the ones who are not to blame. People are drowning, and you guys are enjoying the view

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you play the game you can survive for a long time. You don't even need any knowledge or talent, just blame others behind their back and you'll be ok

    Cons

I work in IT and have witnessed so many good people leave. The poor environment, the inept IT management and the lack of accountability still remains to this day

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR are absolutely clueless, despite years of complaints and never do anything. It's best to say nothing so you can get a paycheck

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I work in IT and I can leave early and also work from home without anyone knowing what I'm doing, so that's a big perk

    Cons

Having to deal with backward and unoriginal thinking and IT staff who have been here for years. Having worked at many companies in the Valley, I find that the management here and to a great degree, the worker bees are absolutely clueless. There's no talent here, with people just sticking around to earn their monthly wage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of the people who have been here for years. The place is being run into the ground

    I worked at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Work is easy in IT since they farm so much work to consultants. I'm surprised that the internal people don't do the work themselves since it's so straightforward. But from what I gather, the department has been decimated because so many people have chosen to leave

    Cons

There have been so many negative reviews of the IT department that it's hard to add much more to what has been said before. But as a consultant and outsider I'm not surprised. I've been verbally abused by aggressive and overbearing IT managers. It's an abusive environment to work in. I would never ever go back regardless of how much they pay me. Disgusting animals

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You continually to antagonize and abuse people, they won't come back

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Compensation is average
    Benefits package is average
A lot of people just skip work and stay at home 'working from home' excuse

    Cons

Very little opportunity for career advancement in IT
Extremely poor management at the IT lower level manager and senior manager level and above
Promotions within IT are not based on merit
People are not proud to work here. In fact it is the complete opposite
IT Managers have little credibility and poor skills and incredibility incompetent and disliked intensely
Knowledgeable people receive very little respect. It is really shocking but people get used to it

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just to echo some of the other reviews I've read below, and to be quite honest the advice is of a similar nature. The IT senior management absolutely just refuse to listen, so there really is no point. It is their way or the highway. Really terrible company to be associated with, and by all accounts, this is the norm

    Pros

If you are just a mediocre engineer, this is the place to play with the management and become one of "them".

    Cons

If you are a hardworking kick-butt engineer, you will be miserably mounted with works that pushed onto you. If you dare to complain, management think you have attitude problem, and give you nasty review.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire all middle managements across the board, otherwise this company cannot even stand on its feet.

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Location in Milpitas is good. But this has got nothing to do with IT. It continues to be an awful place to work. No one wants to come here, and you can tell from the lack of good people coming through or being hired

    Cons

I've worked in IT for several years and it's never been as bad as this. Middle and senior managers who have been here a long time bully others and take credit for peoples work. But nothing is done. Whenever issues are reported to the directors, they just push it back. It's so dysfunctional and depressing. We've lost over 30% of the people here and they're not replaced

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are no leaders here. You just have obedient yes men who are making life a misery for everyone under them. You've been told in countless internal surveys that this is a problem, but nothing is ever done. When it's been raised to you, you turn a blind eye. Take a good long hard look at yourself

I have been working at KLA-Tencor full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I'm probably repeating myself with all the other reviewers but it's really easy to just get by. It's a very political place. i.e people show up to meetings only when their managers are there or when there's something in it for themselves.

    Cons

Very few redeeming qualities. Extremely poor middle and senior IT management. It's been this way for years. Attribution is extremely high. No one wants to join. The people left are low skilled and have a poor and negative attitude. It's hard to say this about my fellow IT colleagues, but they're very apathethic. No one cares. No one pushes you. There's lots of infighting and IT managers empire building. No one respects the lower level managers. They are awful in the extreme. No talent and have been here for years. Absolutely the worst place I have ever worked at
