I worked at KPMG (More than a year)

    Pros

    - You will learn a ton of whatever division that you will belong to (audit, tax, and advisory) during a short period of time. - Good benefits and personal time-off (PTO policy from 1st year - Nice, neat office environment - Many talented people that are willing to help you whenever you need help

    Cons

    - Hard to balance life and work - As you will need to work over time (sometimes, 12 hours straight for 5 days and 8 hours of weekend work at KPMG office with your engagement team members), you would be burnt out by the end of a busy season - As far as I felt, the firm struggles to motivates employees to work at the firm - High turnover rate (I feel average working term at the firm is 3-4 years)

    Advice to Management

Need to motivate employees in any dimension. This is associated with a better retention rate of the current employees. I hope the firm will have the best retention rate in the Big4 league!

    Pros

Strong brand, well-known clients, well positioned in post-crisis world to deliver advisory services, generally bright people

    Cons

Limited opportunities to distinguish oneself, Big 4 consulting requires little intelligence, easy to get pigeon-holed

    Advice to Management

Do more to accommodate staff's career interests, improve training, improve proprietary tools & resources

I have been working at KPMG full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company will constantly challenge you by exposing you to new technical accounting topics and opportunities to prove yourself in a tough situation. There are many high profile clients that you have the opportunity to work on. The reputation of working at a Big 4 accounting firm is good. Majority of the people are intelligent and motivated.

    Cons

The tough situations are caused by high turnover. People quit because the workload is high. Management doesn't do anything to change the workload which results in even higher workloads and more people leaving; vicious cycle. Management makes claims to change things but things never change. Compensation is low for the hours worked. I honestly believe there is collusion between the Big 4 to keep wages low.

    Advice to Management

Change the compensation structure. If a project comes up (outside typical busy season) that requires busy season type hours, ask for volunteers for the project with the understanding they will be compensated accordingly (substantial bonus for the work, temporary raise, etc). This would reward the people doing the extra work instead of making the people who are placed on it feel like they are getting screwed.

I worked at KPMG as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Little hierarchical treatment of employees and contractors. Team spirit. Leaders in the industries the company represent. Learned project managers able to provide viable expertise to clients..

    Cons

Sometimes a lack of clear direction, confused communication. Not everyone was alerted or up to speed on the project at hand. Caused some confusion and additional work.

    Advice to Management

Establish project buy-in and clear communication/objectives at all team levels within a project.

I have been working at KPMG full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits package. The firm will really take care of you. Connections to great experienced professionals, and a worldwide reputation.

    Cons

In the advisory practice, things get pretty hit or miss. The risk service line is world-renowned, but the management consulting line is newer, and underdeveloped.

    Advice to Management

Invest in practice development! There will never be a true culture for advisory unless the knowledge base is developed and more easily accessible. Keep trying to break down barriers between service networks.
