    Out of Touch

    Senior Associate (Current Employee)

ProsI have a lot of great peers that I work with like me. They are engaging and want to make a difference. The training here is acceptable. It could use more relevant online offerings, but overall it is pretty good. The work/ life balance is good and we have strong diversity programs.

ConsThe 2013 merit and promotion process here at KPMG is a train wreck. We have had a lot of things change this year, to include how people are rated and considered for managers. They told us last year that they would be changing the process to align with our merit programs. That meant they were going to push up the promotion dates by ninety days. Even having an extra three months, they were still not able to tell anyone if they would be promoted by the month-end deadline. Since I and many others have spent a lot of time and energy working here to get a promotion, you think they would have enough respect to tell us in a reasonable time or at least to stick to their deadline. I have been informed there are some groups that are lowering our ratings because we have too many high achievers. These are all cost saving measures, and this comes on the heels of one of the most profitable years we have had in many years. I would think twice before coming to KPMG if you are leaving college or looking for a career boost. This is a tough place to build a career. They fell out of the top 100 for a reason and it has become apparent to me. My friends are looking to join some of the other Big Four Firms and I have considered going with them because I do not see this getting better. It is time for a fresh start somewhere else.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe clear in your communications. Stop procrastinating and delaying the rewards that have been earned by your staff. Treat people with the same courtesy you expect from others. We work hard and want to be successful, so please stop being an obstacle to our success.

    Tax Support

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Los Angeles, CA

ProsPlenty of readily available software, if you know how to use them. Sometimes, there are food events. Partners can participate, but it's usually just the same one.

ConsCore values from upper management to support staff do not apply. Brown nosing, cronyism, posturing and lies are quietly common from mid-management. Some other staff are worse. To stay employed, don't even approach HR, unless it's to say how perfect things are. Their only job is to cater to Partners. Just look down, take any attitude and do not disagree with anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementA good person will have more core values in their little pinky than most anyone in Tax will have in their whole body. HR is a joke. Maybe you just didn't notice there is a recession, but you may as well have taken away a person's home as well as their job.

Honeymoon to Divorce in less than 6 months...great place to stay for less than a year

Senior Associate - Advisory (Former Employee)
    San Diego, CA

    Pros1.) Good compensation and benefits
    2.) KPMG on your resume
3.) Opens doors to other firms/corporations
    4.) Good training opportunities

    Cons1.) GITC's, GITC's, GITC's...thats everything you do here...nothing else.
2.) No clear communication from management on approach to firm-wide IT Audit issues
    3.) 401k company matches vests 20% over 5 years
4.) Staff are overworked and the type of work becomes boring to say the least, there is absolutely no variety
5.) Long-term outlook is testing and/or reviewing general IT controls...who wants to do this for the rest of your life?
6.) The time needed to invest in staff to understand what they're doing and why they're doing it is not there. If management took the up-front time to coach the staff, it would pay dividends.

Advice to Senior Management1.) Learn to understand the capabilities and experience of the staff, instead of plugging and chugging
2.) Management needs to communicate one consistent approach to staff
3.) Understand that not everyone wants to work 24/7, work/life balance is needed, especially with the mundane work that we do
4.) Need variety in type of work, otherwise people get burned out and sick of this work

Laid off within a week of them saying that they would not lay off workers

    Audit Associate (Current Employee)
    Jacksonville, FL

ProsBig four experience. If you are lucky you get to work with many different companies. Great experience in different industries.

    ConsVery clickish culture.
Only recruite african americans to increase their minority share (saw this in an email)
Don't believe a word they say. Watch your back as they will lie to your face and behind your back.
    Expect to work late hours.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey should treat their people better especially when so much is expected of workers.

ProsThe experience of working for one of the "Big 4" and being able to put that on a resume (makes other companies drool when they see that on paper, for whatever reason(s)). 5 weeks vacation.

ConsOh where do I even begin...the long hours, no such thing as "work-life balance", you have ZERO life outside of work between the months of January and March, very little comradery between you and your co-workers, and you might unfortunately get stuck with a PML, which is basically your boss, who really doesn't commit any time or effort in helping you develop.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo the partners, get more involved in your associates lives!!! This felt like one of the most stressful times in my life and I had no turn to.
