I have been working at Kaplan

    Pros

Kaplan values innovation, so the culture is very flexible and encourages free thinking. While there are departmental silos, Kaplan also has a lot of shared services--this affords you the ability to work in many different areas of the organization and to get a variety of different projects and experiences.

    Cons

Because Kaplan is a culture of innovators, it is also changing. The change can be frenetic and is not always as data driven or well-researched as it may need to be.

Consequently, there are a lot of "tests" at Kaplan--most of which never go in to production (but also never get turned off), so there is a level of disorganization and complexity that makes it difficult to get your job don.

I worked at Kaplan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

if you are interested in touching foreigners, especially young people. This is a good place for you. You will have access to multinational cultures, which is a lot of fun.

    Cons

You have to be extremely patient, since you job is basically teaching foreigners speaking English. And keep to mind to be nice and friendly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is not much personal growth here, unless you want to be an English teacher for a life time.

I worked at Kaplan part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Can choose own schedule
    - Flexible with hours
    - Little interference from managers
    - Solid pay

    Cons

    - Very difficult to work more than 20 hours in a week since just about all the classes are scheduled for the same timeframe.
    - Not a lot of opportunities for advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Paying SAT/ACT tutors $20/hr when you collect $150/hr from clients is a tough pill to swallow for a lot of the employees.

I have been working at Kaplan as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation was great for a college student and time spent prepping or diving was compensated for.. the centers were great locations and it was a lot of fun.

    Cons

When management changed and the centers closed classes were run out of random hotel conference rooms which varied on supplies and quality a lot. Everything was online for management which was difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the Kaplan centers and better management in person.

I have been working at Kaplan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are smart, work hard, and are fun to be around. It's a very social environment (monthly social gatherings, ping pong breaks, lunch at the cafeteria). Innovative thinking is alive and well. New technology is evaluated and put to use. There are REAL IT Architects that work there.

    Cons

There's been a string of distracting organizational changes (layoffs, restructuring, leadership) over the past three years. Well-intentioned efforts to improve IT effectiveness don't appear to have been prioritized outside of IT. There's the typical, dreaded corporate "performance review" process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make organizational change a company-wide initiative, not just an IT initiative. IT cannot become the phenomenal resource you envision if every other department maintains their status quo. Transform the way the company operates, not just one department.
