I have been working at Kennametal

    Pros

The people, whether recently hired or "lifers," are generally excellent to work with. I have enjoyed most of the new relationships I have built. The pay is not out of line for similar jobs. The bathrooms and break room are kept in spectacular condition.

    Cons

There is zero career advancement opportunity. Kennametal is very good at "dangling the carrot" to keep people around but the only advancement opportunities are from within the customer service field. Forward, progressive thinking is frowned upon. Overachieving and excellent need not apply here. Mediocrity is celebrated. Some (not ALL) of management can be very close minded and condescending. The general feel of the office is that employees are treated like children (i.e. assigned seating, assigned lunch breaks, STRICT attendance policy, socializing is discouraged).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more open-minded to the ever changing work-place. This is not the 1980's or even the 90's anymore. You don't foster a thriving workplace by stifling creativity, talking down to your employees and, for all intents and purposes, discouraging any kind of employee socialization.

I have been working at Kennametal full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and are family oriented for the most part . There are many great people who work here.Very safe enviroment.

    Cons

Departments are very separated from one another. There is a strong disconnect between management and personnel. This leads to poor operating procedures and ultimately low morale. Enviroment can be very stressful due to inefficient processes.
Career development and advancement is extremely poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead by example. Recognize the talent you have and utilize it to be advantageous for both the company AND that employee. Consructive criticism and employee feedback are belittled and ignored.

    Pros

    Good benefits and resonable pay.

    Cons

    Not good work/life balance.
    Priorities change almost every day.
The preformance review process is a joke.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some excellent people working for you. Need to value input from the subject matter expert... believe and trust them. You should personally thank your reportees at least once a month. Be sencere. Not scheduled, just on the fly.

    Pros

They are very safety oriented. The employees on the floor are hard working, honest, and are closer to you then family at times. Benefits are covered by employer.

    Cons

There are a lot of management changes. Safety policy changes are daily. There is no bond between upper management and floor employees. They took away our Christmas bonuses that we counted on as part of our salary. They lead temporary employees on. They bought ISA without knowing the ins and outs of the company they were buying. There is no HR.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

I have been working at Kennametal

    Pros

The pay is adiquate and the benifits are up there, all due to a union the fights hard for these benifits not because the company wants to pay for them.

    Cons

Working for a plant manager who is more interested in corprate image and not real operation of the one plant. His corprate image style forces policies on us that don't fit our manufacturing. he is trying to force a square in our round hole.

Also dealing with the "INHUMANE RESOURCES" Taryn Blair the most inpersonal and unprofessional and incompetent person for the job. most new employees since she has started have most if not all of there benifits screwed up in one way or another all by her. As she comes to work dressed in GOTH garb, Grow up Taryn you are suppose to be a professional.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice for Carlos. You have put in place a plant manager who has failed at every other job he has had and is failing here, ie; every week pumping nubers up to look like we are still doing good even though we are going backwards, sells off 8000 gallons of oil to make his budget buring a time when oil is going out of control, we haven't had a labor Arbotration in about 10 years and now since Rick and Taryn we have 3 current with probably more to come, He has 2 NLRB cases against him again probably with more to come, he has OSHA called on him do I need to say it? these two Taryn and Rick are not just counter productive to the people on the floor(union member) but more importatly they are counter productive to the whole company. even thou it is well known you may have put these two in place to break the union we beleive this will be couter productive for this company as a whole.

So my advice is Fire Rick and Taryn and lets move toward a more productive company

I worked at Kennametal full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Location. Good brand value for company. Good and friendly environment. Competitive pay and perks.

    Cons

People are egoistic and sometimes non co-operative. People place self interest ahead of company interest. Especially in shop floor, management has failed to bring in efficient work culture and average age of employees is too high for a manufacturing company. People try to stop others from doing good work. Mantainance of machines is worst.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plz bring new technologies and machines. Machine accuracies and repeatability are too bad.

I worked at Kennametal full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the best companies to start your career.Good Pay for new recruits.Resonably a good work Environment.Greater stress on Safety. No work pressure ( but not good for the organisation ).

    Cons

Unprofessionally managed Does not have a clear career plan for any level in the heirarcy. You can find 'MANAGER's every where who are more interested to "manage"than to work hands on.Has one of the worst performance evaluation process and you score if you are "good" with your manager. One's career growth is entirely depended on how well you are connected to Top Management in Bangalore or Latrobe. Some get promoted every six months while some may not get promoted even after 6 years- depending on how close you are with those who matter in the .A person with good "connections" can get paid handsomely even without lifting a finger for years.Engineers and Managers who have been long associated with the company are treated like "scrapt".The Matrix reporting has ensured that most of the managers does not have any accountability. The condition of the employees is even worst. The salary of a new Graduate Engineer is more than the salary of an employee who would have put in more than 20 yrs of service. One can expect a decent career development only if you are in Sales.DEFINTELY NOT A COMPANY WHERE ONE CAN PLAN A LONG CAREER.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes to the ROT which has creeped in.Stop just listening to your immediate subordinates ,Try to talk to your subordinate's subordinate.Decentralise decision making.Stop evaluating people on how well they can speak in English or how well they can make a ppt or how well you "personally" know that person.First and formost start showing respect to those who have stayed on with the company even through the tough times.Stop evaluating the performance based only on the "METRICS"-which no way helps in survival or growth of the Organsiation. Finally start giving due importance to those who are not in Sales .
