I have been working at Kimball International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

This company has been great working with me to allow me to be the mom I needed to be and setting my hours where I needed them. I have been given opportunities to grow and advance with in the company. When announcing their closure this year that have given many of us a year to two years to figure out what we are doing and find employment. It's sad, but I'm grateful for the time to adjust.

    Cons

For what I do I am paid horribly low, but was willing to endure such to balance me family life. If you are looking for advancement and pay that matches this may not be a fit for you. If you are willing to make a trade off for the sake of family life then it'll be a good fit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have always said this company needs to do better in training those that are looking to advance, especially your leads.

mostly the personal are very easy to get along with and they have an HR department that is very understanding of any issues that you might have emotionally or physically

    Cons

$$$ they do not give yearly raises and some of the older employees are left with lesser pay than the new hires coming in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Kimball International full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Not to much possitive to say about the company. They really seem more about the inside group then about the company or the people.

    Cons

Young people with little experience are often hired over people of real experience. It creates an atmosphere where incompetent management can gain suporters. Young inexperienced people tend to go along with the program and are moldable. Experienced people won't put up with it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the departments are hiring inexperienced people, it's a red flag. Consider the risk in these departments to be very high!

I have been working at Kimball International full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You will be recruited with a competitive salary
It's located in a small town that can be great for young families
The parent company has a good financial position

    Cons

The business units act independently and some are forced to compete head-to-head against each other.
In spite of commitments you receive at hiring as a manager, you will not likely receive the financial or personnel resources needed to even accomplish the work at a rudimentary level - so forget trying to do great work. For example, one business unit is working with 8-9 year old computers (this is not hyperbole) that cannot use current basic software like Microsoft Office.
Strategy and budget changes are frequent at some business units - strategy can change quarterly and budgets can change weekly.
For one business unit, corporate leadership freaks over one day changes in sales even though this is not a consumer nor a consumable business. It creates ongoing fear among leaders that quickly impacts employees.
Raises are non-existent. In some divisions, bonuses have not been paid for 4+ years.
While the small town of Jasper is like Mayberry, it is also difficult to be accepted as an out sider. This also applies within the company, If you are a geographic outsider, don't expect to even be asked to lunch.
There's lots of talk about balancing personal and work life. It's all talk. There are not enough human resources to achieve the required tasks in less that 50+ hours a week at any professional level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get an outside evaluation of the company culture, the provision of resources to achieve the work, and the approach to strategy development and execution.

    Pros

If you want to roll-up your sleeves and get to work there is opportunity for growth. There are a great number of resources to assist you in your everyday workload.

    Cons

A non-positive attitude will not get the necessary work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Additional support is necessary beyond people.

I have been working at Kimball International

    Pros

Kimball International is a financially stable company that is now focused in their established business segments. There are many great employees that make it a better place to work.

    Cons

The company is not a dominate player in any of its segments which makes it a struggle to compete. Frequently changing priorities disengage employees and erodes productivity. They talk about developing employees, but there is little effort to fulfill that. Processes are very cumbersome and not customer-friendly which makes Kimball difficult to do business with. Creativity and innovation are discouraged as a result of corporate structure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a cultue of encouragement and trust with your employees, but with accountability at all levels - beginning with senior management. There are a lot of good people who could do a much better job if they were not discouraged by leadership.

I have been working at Kimball International

    Pros

Great company culture that fosters honesty, integrity, flexibility, teamwork, autonomy, open communication, family environment, work life balance and continious improvement mentality

    Cons

The corporate headquaters is located in small town and there is not as much to do for entertainment. Accordingly, HQ lacks age diversity (average employee age is in early 40's).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Kimball needs to improve its recruiting efforts to a more age and ethnicly diverse workforce and do a little bragging as far as PR initiatives go because they are a wonderful company but not too many people know it
