A great company gone bad

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Neenah, WI

I worked at Kimberly-Clark

ProsThere is a very good benefits package. The community is safe and has a low cost of living.

ConsThe corporate culture has deteriorated substantially over the last few years. Honesty and support from management are hard to find. The new performance management system and related policies have been specifically designed to minimize compensation increases and cut costs, and ratings have no relationship to actual performance. There is no concern for work-life balance. Management demands completely loyalty and devotion -- willingness to do whatever they ask at any time -- while not giving any loyalty or respect to workers in return. Basically, the work force is view as just another input widget like pulp or shipping costs.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to treat employees as humans. Be honest and tell the same stories to staff as to the street. Stop taking huge pay and bonus increases while doing everything possible to decrease the pay of the peons.

Used to be great - now needs more focus core values and products.

Manager (Current Employee)
Appleton, WI

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark

Prosgreat mix of staff - but this has changed drastically lately & morale is very low currently.

Consas a global company we've been seduced into thinking that staff can be commoditized and treated as "heads" rather than "people" with more knowledge and experience than they're given credit for. We seem to be currently looking just for "cheaper" rather than "better value".

Advice to Senior Managementmanage, direct, lead. be confident enough to make decisions and stand by them - even if they don't fit "the process". "the process" doesn't sell our products or actually get anything done. fix the company & the share price will follow (not the other way round). micromanagement and indecision are crippling the ability to get things done. sometimes you have to try and fail in order to suceed - but there are too many people are trying to take credit for anything that's looking sucessful - rather than simply being given clear responsibilities in their specific areas.

A global company with Victorian Values

Manufacturing Team Member (Current Employee)
Barrow in Furness, England (UK)

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time for more than 10 years

ProsShift system allows adequate leisure time, reasonable pay but on the slide compared to other local employers.

ConsAs an employee of over ten years the management in this mill can be summed up in three words, unethical, hypocritical and vindictive. Nepotism and crony-ism rule, health and safety is preached but not practised. Used to be a fine place to work but now people are leaving in droves. Accident victims are coerced into work so that they do not have to be reported to the US. It's a real shame because the parent company was ethical employer of the year last year.

Staff: Politics, Ego, Lack of basic courtesy.

Ruled by FEAR

Marketing Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark

ProsIf you are lucky, you may get a comparable pay.
A few well-known brands.
Depending on your department you may get some reasonable work-life balance.

ConsGreat example of a passive-aggressive culture, where it’s all about survival at any cost.
You’re on your own when it comes to career development; absolutely no company support. Constant cost cutting seems to be the only way to manage the business.
Very few to no promotional opportunities; career development rotations ceased to exist about 4 years ago.
Notion of employee motivation doesn’t exist.
Obsolete performance management system, where people are managed by fear of getting a low rating at the end of the year.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat’s the point, they never listen anyway. In fact, run it into the ground faster, so someone could come in and bring it back to fame.

Only people from Wisconsin should apply

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Kimberly-Clark

ProsGreat people working to make good high volume, low value products. Opportunities to learn the consumer products business abound. Good place to become a well-rounded employee.

ConsPerformance is not rewarded and creativity is frowned upon It is a top down management style and you either do it the way they've always done it, or you are encouraged to leave. If you are not from Wisconsin or the U.P., you have no hope of advancement in this company.

Safety Program

Winder Operator (Current Employee)

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark

ProsThere are many locations to work in the USA and abroad, and it is easy to get hired on with little effort it seems.

ConsMany of my fellow employees agree that the safety policies are very extreme. It seems the company feels that if they penalize us when we precievably do something unsafe. Not sure where they are headed with this issue, but it is very unreasonable and inept. It surely makes this a rather nasty place to work. There policy is one gets sent home for two weeks without pay, second is immediate termination. It appears we are just "B" numbers, (ie. B71233). Somewhere us employees lost our names and our personalities.

Advice to Senior ManagementBack off on the punishment for precieved safety violations. Management needs to be real and understand that persons are going to get hurt in a manufacturing environment. K-C has lost some very valuable personnel due to violations, and these persons kept K-C equipment functioning. K-C has had a lot of employees quit because of the policies. It is not right...
