Smalltown Values in a Big Company

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

While Kimberly-Clark is a large, global corporation, it still operates under smalltown values. Everyone acts with integrity and a personal sense of responsibility for the success of the company. There's a strong feeling of community and everyone is treated as if you're their next-door neighbor. Great work-life balance and emphasis on family.

    Cons

Slow to move and make changes. Risk-averse and at times ends up playing defense rather than offense.
In terms of employee promotion within the sales offices, be prepared to move. The quickest advancements (and pay raises) come if you're willing to relocate. Small offices lead to slow turnover and the more willing you are to move for the job vs. the location, the better.

    Cons

Training for new roles is lacking - need more support in this area

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

KC is a great area to work and lots of growth opportunities. Help support this by making sure proper transition/training is in place to ensure success in the new role.

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I’ve worked here for 5 years. My first experience was in Customer Service in the Neenah Office. Customer Service is a great team to start out on as you really learn a lot about the company and you meet a lot of friendly people. There is also a great work-life balance at the Neenah location and a lot of families love the flexibility that the company offers. I now hold a role in one of the Field Sales offices. I believe that each sales office is different and the culture is dependent on the people there. This experience has been a challenge, but has taught me a lot about our customer facing teams.

    Cons

Each office location has their pros and cons. The Neenah office is in a small town so it is hard for people to adapt if they are used to a bigger city. The Field Sales offices do not have as much work-life balance flexibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every Team Leader is different so I have no specific advice to give.

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Many opportunities available for many different career tracks.
    - Highly competitive salaries compared to region.
    - Benefits (medical/dental/vision/education/vacation) (there are more but I don't remember them at this moment)
    - Comfortable work conditions

    Cons

    - Poor communication by mid-level management (in both style and in informative content)
    - Inadequate planning and implementation of change control throughout lower levels of the corporation. (Regional level and especially at the facility level)
    - Major discontinuities between the "Exempt" (salaried) and "Non-Exempt" (hourly) exist in the workforce in terms of privileges and opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow hourly employees the ability to be able to move into salaried ranks. Career development is very segregated between the two classes of employees. Many hourly employees do not see any reason to strive for improvement in themselves or the company as a result of the stratification and segregation.

    I worked at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, good benefits, good people.

    Cons

Political culture, minority people get majority of promotions thus if you are not top talent or a minority - good luck getting a promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Push out the dead weight management that has been in the same position for 20+ years.

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Senior Leaders are very approachable
People here want you tos succeed
CEO walks the talk on diversity

    Cons

Need to get middle managers as progressive as the CEO

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to train your team leaders on how to be better managers in advancing an employee's career.
You need to value your older workers as well as younger ones since they bring wisdom and know- how to the table. There is too much emphasis on TOP TALENT and the fact that they are below 40. There are a small percentage of the population at K-C and they will wind up leaving in the next couple of years. So don't be so quick to place all your eggs in their basket.

    I worked at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed my job and the people I worked with. While company benefits are absolutely awesome; starting salaries are low so they try to sell you on the benefits.

    Cons

Limited career growth; although Irving, TX is headquarters, you would have to relocate to another city in order to have a chance at upward mobility.

    I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time

    Pros

Great Work Life Balance, Young talent development, supports personal growth, international travel opportunities, diverse work force, open door policy

    Cons

recent turnover in senior leadership, promotions of canidates to merely show diversity, excessive spending on things that aren't desired, slow/unorganized onboarding process

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rework the the internal job searching process. Current system seems to only allow promotion of an individual based on job availability rather than merit

I have been working at Kimberly-Clark full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Company with satisfying salaries and flexible work arrangements available. Good Training opportunities. Good career opportunities if you are coming in from the outside. There is a lot of great people to learn from.

    Cons

Difficult to understand Performance Management System – It doesn't evaluate people with similar roles in the same way. It create an environment where it is better to stay still than take risks and go to win the match...

    Slow decision making; Big company politics; lots of conflicting initiatives;

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Walk the walk - An organization doesn't change if you choose vanilla 9 of 10 times... Looks for the outliers that can embrace your vision instead of people that looks for the status quo...
