I have been working at Kirkland's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Beautiful products to look at and work with. Decent 20% discount. A few friendly co-workers. Decent shopping center surrounds the store.

    Cons

The manager is complete jerk. When u interview he tells you that he's not a "caring, emotional person" and that he has a "brash personality" that can come off as "rude" but we should just get used to it. He then told stories of how former employees left their jobs there because of his rudeness. All the managers talk about the employees like they're in high school and they talk about on another behind each other's back as well. There is definitely favoritism and seasonal employees get treated like crap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

try to encourage your employees. How about saying "good job today" or "I like how you did that " saying to someone that you are brash and misunderstood is no reason or excuse to be downright rude. Chastising your employees in front of your customers is completely unprofessional.

I have been working at Kirkland's (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Customer base is very friendly, product is low price and great for just starting out, fellow employees are a great team.

    Cons

Ridiculous amount of work, payroll is at an all time minium, added on tasks and directives during work week with no adjustments to schedule allowed, upper management is out of touch with the workload at the store level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overworked and stressed managers do not make for great team leaders. They need to re-visit their levels of management. The expectations on the SM and Sr.asm as the only full time employees is unrealistic. They basically have the stores being run by hourly employees that only get 15 hours a week. Do you really think 15 hours a week at minimum wage promotes a caring and responsible attitude? Step out of the corporate world and visit reality.

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment, friendly staff. Usual mix of retail customers being mostly pleasant. Always changing, fast paced environment. New merchandise weekly. Store discount.

    Cons

Out of touch upper management. Not interested in genuine feedback on day to day operations a just get it done, no matter how impossible attitude. Expectations are difficult to keep up with as payroll (especially management) is kept to a minimum, often creating a dangerous environment in the stock room as well as sales floor. Nearly impossible to keep the customer first with the amount of tasks a staff of often times only 2 employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in your employees. Most are passionate about the job but are quickly overwhelmed by it. Staff the store appropriately to make sales goals AND clean the store AND properly merchandise AND carry out the daily task list and so on and so on and so on...

I have been working at Kirkland's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You will meet good people (customers) while working there.

    Cons

Low pay, horrible hours (10-15) hours per week. store management will take you off the schedule sometimes if he feels a personal way about you & will replace you without notice. Most of the managers takes everything personal, if their outside life isnt going well they will bring there problems to work and take it out on you. They make cashiers do all of the labor. On truck days they expect so much but we are only getting paid so little. They wont give you raises either, ive been there for 3 years, still making a couple of cents from what i started from.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop taking personal issues to work. Train your management better to follow instructions correctly by store codes. Start praising your cashiers than treating them like they are nothing. Give us raises!!

    Pros

Discount 40% as the store manager. Customers were great. Loyalty club good.

    Cons

Managers not treated like adults. District manager does not hold people accountable at any level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Very high paced! No down time.

    Cons

Low pay, not enough help nor hours to get things done. Upper management doesn't ever show appreciation just wants more from you... High turn over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value all your employees not just upper management! Remember it is your "Team Members" that makes the customers experience special and if the employee doesn't feel important the customer more than likely will not. It is us who shape their experience.

    Pros

discounts, paid days off, some of the customers helped pass the time

    Cons

a lot of moves, lying managers, old fashion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

lets start with the truth....my manager often lied to get her manager to do everything. there was no team effort, and no development, because Kirkland's is willing to promote anyone to be a store manager. my manager would often leave early because she was salary, and tell stories so you could feel sorry about every mistake she did, or justify everything. I kinda feel bad for her. other than my manager the job was cool, no down time.
