    Overwhelming

    Third Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsFun environment, friendly staff. Usual mix of retail customers being mostly pleasant. Always changing, fast paced environment. New merchandise weekly. Store discount.

ConsOut of touch upper management. Not interested in genuine feedback on day to day operations a just get it done, no matter how impossible attitude. Expectations are difficult to keep up with as payroll (especially management) is kept to a minimum, often creating a dangerous environment in the stock room as well as sales floor. Nearly impossible to keep the customer first with the amount of tasks a staff of often times only 2 employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees. Most are passionate about the job but are quickly overwhelmed by it. Staff the store appropriately to make sales goals AND clean the store AND properly merchandise AND carry out the daily task list and so on and so on and so on...

    Horrible

    Cashier/Stock/Sales (Current Employee)
    Tulsa, OK

ProsYou will meet good people (customers) while working there.

ConsLow pay, horrible hours (10-15) hours per week. store management will take you off the schedule sometimes if he feels a personal way about you & will replace you without notice. Most of the managers takes everything personal, if their outside life isnt going well they will bring there problems to work and take it out on you. They make cashiers do all of the labor. On truck days they expect so much but we are only getting paid so little. They wont give you raises either, ive been there for 3 years, still making a couple of cents from what i started from.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop taking personal issues to work. Train your management better to follow instructions correctly by store codes. Start praising your cashiers than treating them like they are nothing. Give us raises!!

    Cautious

    Team Member (Current Employee)

ProsNice product, able to be creative, co-workers are nice

ConsUnloading trucks in extreme heat & extreme cold. Pay is not anywhere close to being acceptable to what it should be for what is expected of you. Heavy merchandise that women should not have to deal with. Climbing large ladders. Expectations are unrealistic at times. Constant battle weather to wait on customers or complete tasks. Manager is unprofessional.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake into consideration that most of the store staff consists of women & they should not be doing such heavy physical labor. Pay scale needs to be higher! Men should be hired to do truck unloading!

    Store manager

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsDiscount 40% as the store manager. Customers were great. Loyalty club good.

ConsManagers not treated like adults. District manager does not hold people accountable at any level.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your store managers with more respect and give them the ability to hold their team accountable.

Love the people I work with but the company is not about taking care of it employees...very low pay!!!

    Team Member (Current Employee)
    Canton, GA

ProsVery high paced! No down time.

ConsLow pay, not enough help nor hours to get things done. Upper management doesn't ever show appreciation just wants more from you... High turn over.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue all your employees not just upper management! Remember it is your "Team Members" that makes the customers experience special and if the employee doesn't feel important the customer more than likely will not. It is us who shape their experience.

    Long Term Growth

    Store Manager (Former Employee)
    Midland, TX

ProsManagement turnover is high so that creates a need for management jobs and security for those willing to stay.

Conspay scale, under staffing or labor scale

Advice to Senior ManagementThis company should be used as an entry level management position and a stepping stone

    senior assistant manager

    Senior Assistant Manager (Current Employee)
    Douglasville, GA

Prosdiscounts, paid days off, some of the customers helped pass the time

Consa lot of moves, lying managers, old fashion

Advice to Senior Managementlets start with the truth....my manager often lied to get her manager to do everything. there was no team effort, and no development, because Kirkland's is willing to promote anyone to be a store manager. my manager would often leave early because she was salary, and tell stories so you could feel sorry about every mistake she did, or justify everything. I kinda feel bad for her. other than my manager the job was cool, no down time.

Too much work, too little reward.

    Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsBest retail customers I have ever encountered.
    Interesting products.
    Generous discount.

ConsDuring my time with this company (little more than a year) I saw every single Store Manager within my district quit or be terminated.
Hours provided for executing tasks were laughable. Even with a very effective stock crew, expectations were ridiculous and downright dangerous.
Store Management (SM, SAM and AMs) would receive corrective actions for the slightest transgressions, even if unintentional or in the process of doing what was right. However, Store Management was unable to enforce basic attendance policies with corrective actions on part time employees.
Rate of pay (for California Store Managers) was very low and was explained as balancing out due to the amount of OT required.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management (DMs, AMs, Regional) regard Store leadership with disdain and disrespect. I was told by an Area Manager that District Managers were able to effectively run all stores in their districts without a Store Manager, thus illustrating how important they view the role and the work we did every day. The level of accountability to DMs, AMs and RMs was very poor. Based on my experience and experiences of others I have spoken to - this company is lacking a very simple awareness of the truth: your stores ARE your customers. The customers are your reason for existing and give you a job. Support your stores because they support your customers. Happy employees = happy customers. It is unlikely that your employees ask ridiculous things of you. Fairness and respect go a long way.

Very disappointed in treatment after so many faithful years of service

    Senior Assistant Manager (Former Employee)

    ProsGreat co workers, fun environment

ConsTerrible view of employees, you are just a warm body and they have no problem letting you know that. Very disorganized, inconsistent in enforcing company policies.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want good, dedicated employees, pay them and treat them as if you actually appreciate them. I feel as if I was paid fairly, but as a member of management who had access to other employee's pay rates, I know that the amount they were given is well below what should be expected for the amount of work and time they are expected to dedicate to a job where you are only giving them a max of 25 hours a week. I saw too many valuable employees come and go because of the lack of fair compensation and a general disregard for their needs. Also, very poor communication, our store was subject to a loss prevention investigation due to a large shrinkage. I was fired for fraternizing (hanging out) with my employees, which had nothing to do with the problem... Come to find out, there was no shrink, someone forgot to check in 4 trucks of freight, why no one at home office never noticed that those trucks were never checked in is beyond me. I lost my job which I was very good at, had NEVER been reprimanded for anything and which my superiors loved me for nothing essentially, because I knew then and know now that even my store manager was guilty of the same thing... But I suppose that since she didn't come clean, she gets to continue to work and provide for her family...
