  1. Management very scattered, most coworkers don't care, i.e. get high during lunch break.

I have been working at Kmart

    Pros

Low pay, horrible discount, treated poorly, no pros

    Cons

management is clueless how to manage people, and very rude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For middle management, learn how to deal with people, for upper management, insure everything you tell us to do is practical, because almost none is, and what is is error ridden making it hard.

I worked at Kmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy job, close to the house. That was it.

    Cons

Immature management, everyone slacks off and the hard workers get yelled at. Stupid people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Now that the store is closing, karma will be a pain to you. Be professional people next time.

I worked at Kmart part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great to work with and hours are flexible. There is also an excellent employee discount program.

    Cons

Minimum wage with no raises (even when promoted to supervisor), poor management, company overall is failing with no new stores opened since 2004 with several closed. Also, the equipment is very outdated and barely functional, company won't sell the latest technology, and stores have a very dated look with no plans to remodel. Products constantly out of stock and ton of empty shelf space.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some money and you will make money. Consider remodeling stores and upgrading equipment which often fails and frustrates the customer. Also, start looking into selling the most recent technology and products and keep products in stock. If the store sells something a customer wants and has it in stock, they will buy it.

I have been working at Kmart part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly customers ( for the most part ) and co workers

    Cons

Managers gossip like teenagers, very strict

I have been working at Kmart part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

I think that if its your first job it is an alright job. You meet great people and you learn quick.

    Cons

The customers are the worst, they scream and throw the things at the counter. Some employees try to act like your boss and there is no chance of advancement. Wouldn't want to work here, but I do.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Being nicer ..

I worked at Kmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

they love butt kissers & stupid people who won't stand up to them so if you're one of those types Kmart is the place for you!

    Cons

management attitude sucks...they're great at the blame game...they micro-manage...employee majority are part time...6months out of the year they drastically cut part time employee hours to unliveable levels (try going from 37 hr wk to 8 hr wk!) and rationalize it by crying less sales...who cares if majority of you employees can't make enough $$ to buy FOOD, let them go beg for food stamps!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop treating employees like slave labor and stop ridiculing us for wanting to earn a living so we can pay for bare minimum necessities!

I worked at Kmart full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    1. Advancement from within the company is very good especially if you show you want to grow.
    2. Great associates that work hard to push towards a common result.
    3. Fast paced environment
    4. Helping customers made you feel good, especially regular customers that you got to know on a name to name basis.

    Cons

    1. No work-life balance. Be prepared to easily work 70-90 hours a week.
    2. Upper management has no clue as to what is actually going on in the stores.
    3. Unrealistic goals set by company, forget about getting a bonus, they set the goal so high that no one is going to hit 80% of their VPC.
    4. DM's don't understand how it works in a store anymore, they are so far removed that they come in and yell at the management staff and then expect it to just get done.
    5. Managers cannot manage on the limited payroll and staff that are in the building.
    6. Hiring process is a joke, trying to get people in your building can take a while. Some perspective associates will have found another job by the time the drug test gets back.
The list goes on and on and on...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your associates a raise, let them know how much you appreciate them by doing something other than a generic email around Christmas time saying thanks for all the hard work.
Mr. Lampert is letting this ship go and collecting as much money on the property as he can. Clearly he doesn't understand or care to understand retail. It's sad to see such an iconic retailer go out this way, but leaving was the best decision I ever made.

I worked at Kmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The only thing that I liked about this company was that they did work with my school schedule.

    Cons

There was no personal growth. Never got a raise because the the reason was there was no money for raises or promotion. The title was given but not the money. They expected you work as a supervisor but never gave you a chance to move and grow with the company. Informed them could not work Sundays for religious reasons and I still was scheduled to work on Sundays. I never was offered benefits because they never promoted me to full time. Part of management were pervert and was always talking dirty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees and they will take care of you.
