    Pros

    -Great Coworkers
    -Flexible Schedule
    -Reasonable Managers
    -Customers Aren't That Horrible

*Kmart is a self-inducing advertisement junkie. Plan to work here? and set a goal for yourself, just as I did. Still in high school but manage to do this job as well.

    Cons

    -Hectic Hours (40+ hours, wtf!)
    - HR Department Sucks (Unreasonable)
    - Lack Of Communication Makes The Store Look unorganized.

*Like I said before, have your educational goals set out before taking on this job. My managers were nice to understand my situation, except the HR manager. Damn you, manager. :(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR Department needs to check themselves before they wreck themselves. Job is overall good, but have a game plan for a better one. Will stay for at least a year.

I have been working at Kmart

    Pros

Met a ton of great customers and worked with various different people. Perks were decent along with the flexibility to maneuver around your schedule if you are in school. Great for high school students when starting in the retail field as a cashier to learn the business structure of a business.

    Cons

Disorganized management, training wasn't efficient due to management being everywhere,

    Pros

Convenient job for a high school student. Just enough hours to make it worthwhile to work, but not enough to interfere with my school, and they had no problem scheduling me after school and on weekends.

    Cons

Management was spectacularly awful, as was scheduling to even out the workload. I was oftentimes the only cashier running a register during peak hours, and sometimes the service desk wasn't even staffed to help me. I was expected to do returns as well as register, which created problems when I was the only one working at the registers. One day the store manager called us all (including the service counter people) away to the garden department to lecture us about how slowly we were processing transactions... all the while lines of customers were forming at our registers, which the manager had instructed us to leave the lights on over. He refused to let us help the customers until he was done telling us about how we had to get better at helping the customers, which caused a lot of them to storm out declaring that they'd never be back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Schedule enough people to cover peak times instead of trying to rely on the minimum needed before and after.

I worked at Kmart part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

It is a good first job to have and learn about customer service. My co-workers made the job fun and bearable, especially during the holiday season when it gets a bit stressful.

    Cons

The registers were from the dinosaur age, they would malfunction and stop working when there were 20 people in line for layaway and only 2 registers which made it difficult at times. The prices on merchandise were not updated onto the system so having to call for a price check every time made customers upset. Being from layaway felt like being excluded from the rest of the departments since we would never be included in group meetings with other departments. Felt like our department was at the bottom of the list for management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The registers need to be updated or at least fixed so that customers do not have to wait in line for 30 mins while they reboot every 5 mins. Try to include layaway in meetings so the department is up to date on things.

I worked at Kmart full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

You get to work 7 days a week, spend most of you time on the sales floor, meet new people.

    Cons

You must work 7 day a week and more than 10 hours a day to meet expectations. The starting rate is 7.25 which is well below most others. Turnover is very high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise the pay rate. Give your managers their days off. Pick a path and stick to it.
