I worked at Kmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were some of the most genuinely amazing people I have ever worked with. The employee discount was very nice on certain things. Helping customers and getting them in and out with the ability to override things was a plus.

    Cons

Management is very political. They overwork you for way too much. Being underpaid made me leave the company. I was told in order to make one full time spot you would have to eliminate 3 part time spots. It can be done without making It so crazy.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees.....specifically the ones who deal with your customers 1on1 90% of the time. The supervisors in the front end are so undervalued as people when it comes to customers. They think that the supervisors are nothing more than people to ignore and to make look a fool. Back up your employees. When they say no for something sometimes it's for a good reason......don't just overrule them. If you see the same person coming in 4 times a quarter trying to return the exact same item for a new one....wake up......And have clear advancement opportunities since when I was hired before it said you promote within.....

I have been working at Kmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Employees receive a discount of usually 10% off non sale items. Flexible schedule for college students considering 80% of employees are part-time. Helping customers - or as K-Mart insists on calling them in the hunt to become "integrated" retailers - members can be a very rewarding part of your day. Older folks appreciating a minimum wage, part-time worker going out of their way to find what they are looking for is a joy.

    Cons

Hearing " Fine! Then I will go to Walmart and find it and be out of the store in 5 minutes!" Threats when Kmart is out of stock and they do not want to wait for a free shipment. Mangers treat employees like a number, possibly because they cant keep employees long enough to appreciate the good ones...who in turn leave because they cannot handle the poor treatment. Registers do not promote K-Mart as the integrated retailer they are aiming to be...new technology is a must for positive customer service feedback. Members cannot even read their items being rung up.

    Advice to Management

Please, please, please. Show appreciation to your employees. There have been many days I am treated like a peasant ant when really...I love my job...I love helping customers and making sure the floor looks great and all of the pricing is correct to assist members in a more enjoyable shopping experience. Myself and many other employees want Kmart to succeed!!! But...management seems to look passed the care I have for my minimum wage job and see all of their part-timers as a threat...always questioning if we are stealing regardless of our work ethic...always talking poorly of how we dont finish our online training from Sears in time...yet they pile on the work in a puny 4 hour shift and the next day get aggravated when you are doing the online training and not working.

    I worked at Kmart part-time

    Pros

They did pretty well working around my school schedule and I got a lot of hours when I asked for them

    Cons

Pretty much everything else. Things were unorganized and management wasn't on top of things.

    Advice to Management

Not really sure what they can do when the company itself isn't doing very well. Have processes and procedures worked out better and more organized.
