Good Company if you are lucky with managers

    Kohls Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    Coon Rapids, MN

ProsIf you are lucky with managers you'll probably like there.

ConsThough everything depends on the team also. Because a lot of people don't understand that they should work when they are coming there. And then it makes your life miserable, because "We are the team"? that means that everybody will help one another, but usually people who gets that understand they should not work hard, because somebody will come and do job for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to the people who are really working and who don't do anything. Though I should tell the management don't care.

It was a great first job.

    Seasonal Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Covington, WA

ProsAll of the workers are very nice, if you needed a friend or help everyone was willing to help you, the store is always busy if you like fast pace environments.

ConsThere were really no challenges for me, everything was pretty much what you would do at any department store.

This company does not appreciate it's workers.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI like the flexibility for work hours.

ConsGet stuck working closing shifts if part time.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive us better wage increases.

Good benefits, okay work-life balance, unattainable expectations, no payroll.

    Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)

ProsBenefits for management are great. Good work-life balance with time off for vacations. No problem scheduling around a student's school (high school or college) schedule. Loved the benefit of tuition reimbursement and paid maternity leave.

ConsSenior management keeps cutting payroll and expecting better results. I've worked for Kohl's for 9 years and have seen the payroll keep dwindling lower and lower each month, but yet the expectations of the store continue to increase. It's an incredibly stressful environment. Of course with any retail job, the hours you work are not appealing to a family home environment.

    Many Changes

    Department Supervisor (Current Employee)

ProsWork-life balance is stressed as incredibly important (and is treated as such, for the most part--see cons for caveats). Team is like a family -- honestly, probably the only reason I stuck around for so long.

ConsCaveat to work-life balance is that its maintenance is supported only at times convenient to the company; flexible hours to spend time with your kids? Sure. Taking them to see their grandparents for Thanksgiving so you won't be around Black Friday? Try again.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease, PLEASE listen to your associates. Spending your shift in the back office and then ignoring reports of what goes on on your salesfloor only spells disaster.

    Great experience, slow career path

    Associate Designer (Current Employee)
    Menomonee Falls, WI

ProsKohl's is a great place to start your career. Their internship program is stellar, and they have a very high rate of job placement for interns. Kohl's is in it for the long run...I believe that management is setting the company up to last. It might not be the most cutting edge place to work, but your job will be safe.

ConsIt is very difficult to move "up the ladder" at Kohl's. Teams are not consistent in their structure, so moving around between teams can be detrimental to your career growth. There is no formal training for managers, which creates additional inconsistency between teams and leaves some teams vulnerable to horrible management.

    Sales Associate

    Sales Floor Associate (Current Employee)
    Onalaska, WI

ProsPick your own hours of availability. They are pretty good about keeping to your availability.

ConsToo much work not enough time to finish. The pay sucks... It is not comparable to similar companies such as Target. The leadership is different at every Kohl's so if you plan on transferring be careful.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management should understand that since the pay is so low people will not work as hard.

    Eh

    POS Associate (Former Employee)
    Newington, NH

ProsCompany values, schedule posted well in advance.

ConsPush credit cards too much, not enough recognition for good job, you "aren't doing your job" if you don't exceed the daily credit goal.

Advice to Senior ManagementSTOP WITH THE CARDS! The customers that don't have them don't usually want them, and the cashier's pushing them doesn't help! They get annoyed, and probably leave the store complaining about how many times the cashier (was forced by management to ask) asked them if they wanted to apply.

    Kohl's Merchandise Analyst (Former Employee)
    Menomonee Falls, WI

ProsFriendly people (but that's the midwest for you), great work-life balance, relaxed environment

ConsTons of red-tape, tons of corporate politics, wasted time spent on meetings that really have no true productive results that are conducted simply because that's just how it's always been done...

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow for change and creative/different minds to enter the company. The company will not continue to move forward with the same "Kohl's Mold" of a person that consistently gets promoted. Kohl's nearly has a cult following of the employees that love the company vs. the ones that do not. Stop "drinking the Kool-Aid".

    - Very boring at the registers
    - Low pay (starting pay)
    - Not enough hours
    - Having to get credits
